How are you folks getting ready for Thanksgiving?




I'm feeling like the T-Day version of scrooge.
The last few years hubby and I did nothing for Thanksgiving and I liked it that way.

This year I agreed to an invite to my friend's house.
She is trying to learn to cook and has improved to the level of not-disgusting (sorry - not nice but true). She is serving food that I can't eat or will not eat

-cornish game hens -- a little disgusting for me because I don't like eating things that look like birds
-stove top stuffing with raisins -- can't eat wheat / gluten
-green beans or broccoli with canned cheese sauce -- her brother likes this
-sweet potatoes with marshmellows and whatever else goes into that mish mosh (yuck)
-key lime pie--no wheat / gluten

-cranberry sauce in a can -- this I can eat
-deviled eggs --this I can probably eat

She's being a little bossy and said she had everything taken care of (??)!
I'm supposed to bring fresh flowers. Also I told her that hubby and I would be bringing his mini rice steamer because he likes rice better than stuffing. Hubby wants me to bring potato chips too. (Did I say that I don't feel like doing Thanksgiving?)
I'm going to pack my soy yogurt and hummus for myself and maybe some ice cream for everyone else. And some leftover Sprite from a school event.
Most of the time, I offer cash to help pay for her costs, but this time on the phone she acted like she wouldn't except any.
She did make it very clear that she REALLY wants fresh flowers. I'll bring the flowers.

I agreed to go because she really enjoys cooking and having people over. And she and I are family -- we've been together for 30 years now.

Sorry to complain and whine. I'm tired. And I have lots of work to do.
And I'd rather hangout with her some other time when it is not turkey day.

I'm sorry you got sort of cornered.

It sounds like you have a good plan as far as dealing with the food part. I'm sorry your friend is not taking into consideration your dietary needs. That is certainly something i do when having over someone with special dietary considerations (of ANY sort, for ANY reason, on ANY day) and especially on what she considers a celebration where people are supposed to be able to relax and she claims has "everything under control."

it sounds like you essentially must fix and bring your own grub... hummus and yogurt sound good though. also you can eat some rice, right? sigh.

i have therapy on T-day as here it is not celebrated. mom usually makes me a turkey dinner with other trimmings. she uses a breast-of-turkey roast in a rolled form though - it does not resemble any living form. still this year i tried to say skip the turkey but it was too late... easier to have it than to argue against it throughout the holiday. it is nice of her - she does it so *I* can have a Thanksgiving dinner ... it is not celebrated here. Ideally, you and i should swap locations for the last 2 weeks of November, lol.

i am wanting to bring something to pdoc as a 'thank you' for continuing to see me (like maybe a little basket of dried fruit or something - figs, dates, nuts...) but i feel drained as is and this deadline i have has priority. he will not miss it, lol.

well, i hope your outing turns out not too much of a big do, and that you can relax. if that happens, then perhaps it will be ok. and it won't matter that it is Thanksgiving... (ironically).

I can understand your wanting to take something to your tdoc. I don't have
a clue what to have you take. So just figure out what you would like to take.


For thanksgiving Derrick, my husband and I are going to my mom's.
Sabrina and her girls and Will are coming also. Devin says he needs
to study for finals. Now why the heck he has to do this on thanksgiving
I don't understand. But I can't stop him. So he isn't coming.

I couldn't talk my oldest once again into coming and joining the group.
My mom would really have loved it if he had brought his son and came.
But that is life.

Then I'm hoping to get to shop on Friday or Saturday, just a little.

I still have some grandkids to buy for.

Thank you for letting me complain Your post helps me not think that I am a complete whiner.
Usually I stay home in order to avoid food issues --- mine or others.
That's nice that your mom likes to make you a turkey dinner.
Good luck with your deadline. As you say, your pdoc will be ok without the gift.

Oh Mari, I think I would pass on the staples too except for the Key lime...about the only thing Key Lime I would turn down is Yogurt....I just do not like the tang, texture of it.

Have some wine with the Whine, the nibblets you take and deviled eggs sound yummy.I am the same way about birds....
Enjoy being out, and just eat what makes you feel good. Nice to be thought of and have an invite. Then home with no dishes.

I am going to my ds and dil, doing a deep fried turkey and tons of sides, so it will be a long day.

I will look at the Black Friday AD's and see what the sales will be, just to make a list and check it twice. It will be tight Christmas Until our finances get back in order.
I was so hoping dh would have been working again at least pt. We just started picking up security work over night shifts mostly...He had to pull a 14 hr last week for remodeling crews that were locked in a mall.We were going to break it up at 7 hrs a piece, but I ended up sick as a dog, and he could not open the store after the crews had gone.

I am rattling, but keeping the mind busy to make it through the start of the holidays.........
What ever we all do tomorrow, from watch tv, to have dinner with trimmings, everyone is in my thoughts and I give thanks to the gang.
