I am not exactly afraid of them but they ick me out.
They feel weird and squirly.
By the way, we might not have the same kind that you are thinking about.

This is the kind we get around here. It is native to Europe.

I just checked on the one on the other side of the door. I opened the door a crack (it is dark out and light in here). He is still there. If I open the door he will come in and I do not believe I will be skillful enough to pick him up.

I tell hubby that they eat spiders and keep the place nice for us.
Both us are disappointed when we find a dead lizard.

Dear Mari

I've seen (but not heard!) these critters! They are mild mannered but can bite. I would handle them pretty much like any other lizard with a little more caution about the bite (i have been bitten by other lizards, it's like having a hair pin attached to your finger. no blood. i've read geckos have a mean bite though - might wear hand protection or in any case not put fingers in their face.)

perhaps the best thing to do with your guest is leave it there. if you think hubby will try to kill it you could try and move it during the day time hours when it is less active.

if you decide to do that, make the attempt from outside the house, shutting the inner door behind you. i have often used paper cups and cardboard to capture small creatures - anything too small/delicate for me to catch without hurting, or stuff i'm a bit wary of like insects or spiders.

you could wear rubber or garden gloves if you're concerned about being bitten. you need to be very gentle, move in slowly and be careful not to make the "gotcha" move so suddenly that the rim of the cup maims the animal.

bear in mind, if it panics you end up with 2 pieces - a tail-less, panicky gecko and a gecko-less, jumping tail. this is "normal" - the tail mostly regenerates - takes 3 weeks.

i'd probably let it alone so it catches bugs and keeps its tail, especially if hubby doesn't open that window and won't likely notice it and murder it promptly.

i don't get that he kills them, but feels sad when he finds a dead one? that's like 1+1 = 1 ?

I have been doing this since I was a child. Even lost a gold earing in Jackson vill trying to catch one,
A butterfly net works quite well too. A towel thown over the baby works too. It is too heavy for them to squirm out of it. Most of these small lizzards bite but can't hurt you. It just startles you. I have a live in gecko who has lived with me for years. Evidently he has a way in and out of the house. I also caught an iguana who escaped from some person that was 3 feet long. Got him on first try. I was in animal resue for the last 7 or 8 years, and worked with an agency to help sick animals. ginnie

It is 49 degrees out. Much cooler than it has been. This is probably our last cool snap before spring. Mr. Butterfly is mowing the yard as I speak. It's pretty funny because he's wearing a flannel shirt and a knit cap.

We get out the winter clothes for these days and we all look different from our usual selves.


I have been watching the weather like a geek. Can you believe that the temperature just went down one degree in the last hour? What is that! It feels cold.

Wow, 49 would be so welcome in my area. I am not sure what the degree is here.

I was snowing yesterday, and it was sticking here at my house and lots of the area. Not enjoying this change in weather. I need to spring clean,
But I don't like to winter clean.

Today so far no snow, and its nicer outside, but a little nippy.

i have a confession...

even though i like the pretty aspects of spring, and the pleasant weather, i don't generally look forward to it!

too many issues with it...

first, i often get depressed with the advent of spring. i am not specifically seasonal in my cycling overall and this doesn't always happen, but i've had enough spring depressions to have a sense of foreboding ever february.

second, spring = flowers = pollens = allergies = coughing and sinus. What's worse, this year i've already started d/t cause unknown - spring will make it even worse.

third, they took my antihistamine off the market!!!! now i have to experiment WaaaaaAAHHHH!!!

lastly, the public transport system here does not "handle" spring and fall well... they leave the heat on sometimes, a/c on sometimes, other times nothing... and it is not weather coordinated let alone coordinated from one vehicle to another... ya never know wutcher gonna git! but it's less like a box of chocolates and more like a box of all-flavor beans, a magical candy in the Harry Potter series. Anyone care to try an ear-waxed flavored bean?

I find it interesting that the spring is difficult for you. YOu have mentioned this before. Each of the four points is strong enough on its own.

Get some meds and be prepared to try something for your missing antihistamine.

Well that really bytes. You need your own car with driver to take you around. That is the only solution. Drop public transport and get treated like the princess / goddess that you are.
