thanks Donna!

i tell ya, i'm more nervous now than before the interview!

i am starting to think back on some things i shouldn't have said...

i hope they don't dawn on him in retrospect, as they did on me, and cause him to have second thoughts...

i also don't like the fact that at the end, he said, now i'm going to ask you something personal...
i said, what's that...
he said, do you have kids...
i said, you know technically it's illegal to ask me that (and kinda chuckled... paused)
he said, yeah technically it is, but i'm asking anyway... (paused)
i said, no... but... why?
bla bla bla well more back and forth about 'availability' and 'priority' etc. i basically said i had 100% availability and if i didn't i wouldn't be there. but you know...

it is just scary. i have only been asked that once before in an interview. it is really SO illegal. the only reason they ask that is to see if you might 'ditch' them or not be able to handle long hours... if you have kids or are planning to have kids (and are female) well maybe you're not the person they want to hire because they can't bank on you...

equal opportunity MY BUTT.... THEY NEVER ASK MEN THAT QUESTION!!!!!

i probably should have just answered and left it at that but... it bothered me. and it bothered me even more that he pushed it when i pointed out it was illegal.

Dear Waves,

I agree that he stunk up the interview by asking that question, especially when you gave him a chance to back down. What a jerk.

At least you are not going to work with him.
He is going to find you nice people and a good working environment.
You can soon forget about him.

You did a great job today. Try to remember how good you felt about the good parts of today.

Waves

From now on if that question is asked. My response back would be.

The only reason that would be appropriate since its illegal to ask.

Is if you are going to ask me on a date. So if you are single you
can ask the right question.

that's right, i won't be working with him, lol. i was disappointed though... he sounded nice on the phone. his facial mannerisms were less "nice" though. he had sneakiness about him.

well... dunno about that....
one of the two jobs he has now (which, i'd say fortunately, is just as out of reach as the one advertised) is a lead position in charge of managing several small projects (several to me suggests > 2). he said the teams would be 2-3 ppl each. i have supervisory experience but i don't think i'd want to be that scattered and responsible for that many diverse things. he said the distance would be a problem because the shuttle only travels at peak hours and that kind of position requires you to stay late. hrrumppph. i don't even have a job yet, and he's already concerned about the need for constant overtime. i told him i was interested in junior positions (which is what i applied for, btw) where i could pick up experience in specific areas in demand on the current market, and that i'd rather learn more and earn less, than earn more but be relegated to a niche market.

but between you, me, i also don't want to walk right into a high pressure job. going from 0 to 40 hours a week i figure will be hard enough...

dontcha think?

thanks! yes. and this really is progress, because i got feedback on certain things that i can use in continuing my search. also just to think of those things i shouldn't have said like learning moments for next time rather than regrets.

So you have your answer for someone next time they don't take the hint.

Just answer with this. Its appropriate for a illegal question. Especially
one they wont ask a male. Just point that out.
