I have been back to the gym 4 times now. over did it last saturday, only made it 15 minutes on the stair master. Tuesday was the beginners fitness class, 30minutes of light weights and 30 minutes of low impact cardio, I then did another 15 minutes on stair masters, did some leg presses and some other leg exercises with weights. I over did that...even my feet were sore by the next day.In the class we did things like lunges, and squats and abdominal core training. and then a bit of balancing at the end...I have no balance I discovered.
I was dieing...and this is the beginning class. So it is definately where I need to start. I went on thursday but not to the class just did weights and stair masters. Today was a great day. They have a body blade to use for shoulder strengthing, weights, endless rope, arm bike, other weight machines for upper arms. Not doing any leg weights for now...leave that for the class. which I have changed my schedule for work to allow me to go to this 9;30am class on tuesdays and thursdays. Today, I talked with a trainer and he helped me set some goals. I want to be able to run a 5 K race....that is 3.2 miles. using the stair masters is not going to help me run... we talked about total body fitness. I need to eat some protein in the morning for breakfast, so I bought some "muscle milk" drinks with 20 grams of protein the equivalency to 3 eggs. Then later I used a row machine, easy level for 15 minutes...it is cardio for arms and back. Then I warmed up with a fast walk on the tred mill for 5 min then ran at 5.5 MPH for 15 minutes. that was a good work out. I could feel all of the 10 pounds that I gained giggling!!!! since november when I quit lifting weights...that was 6 months ago. I have lost alot of ground. the trainer said that we have muscle memory and it should not take that long to regain that muscle strength. I am trying to be smart about my gym usage. I want to get lean and lose some of the fat that I gained and build more muscle which weighs more than fat.I have that extra 10 pounds right at my belly, the biggest cardio risk place to have belly fat...i wish I could just push that 10 pounds into my muscles! bizi

I am so glad you got back to the gym. I so miss going to the one I was going to. I missed my massage therapist last week too, so I really am a mess. But I'm working to find a way to afford both. There is just going to have to be a way. Hoping for my expense check this week. It would sure help. But I loved your beginner's class till some of the things I can't do. Donna |

sore from the gym this weekend..they say you really feel it 2 days after a work out that would be today. I did not make it to class but am going in to work out a bit and see if I can run abit ont he tread mill. I did not sleep well last night which did not help in me trying to get up to go to class. so I had better get going.

Well it went well at the gym. Lifted some weights....Today I mostly ran for 2 miles at 5 mph. when I took my shoe off there was blood on my sock...it was from my too long toenail digging into my other toe... then jeff and i walked around our neighborhood after dinner for 40 minutes so good on the activity today. Therapy tomorrow.

I over did it....
I lifted too much weights last week. my arm is not well. Saw my OT yesterday, last day is tomorrow. Not really looking forward to going there tomorrow. I feel like an idiot. I don't have good sense as to what is good for my arm...I lifted too much weight the other day and strained my arm. I wonder if I have tendonitis in my shoulder. it hurts to hold my arm out to the side at shoulder height. moderation is sanity....I have never learned to be a moderate person. I wonder if I have permanent damage???? heavy sigh I am a mess.....bizi

Dear Bizi,
The body has healing powers. It can recover. Ask the OT lots of questions so you can have a good plan about going to the gym. You don't have to be a moderate person. My suggestion is that you be moderate in your gym activities. M. |

I doubt you've done permanent damage in the gym, but you should get your shoulder checked out because it's been bothering you for a while now.

today was my last day at the therapist.
It was a sad day for me there. I teared up a bit...feeling like I failed somehow. they were very nice. were encouraging, said I could call if I needed to, which was very nice. told me that I needed to trust that I would heal, 6 months minimum...this is good to know, it has been 3 1/2 months so far. so I am going to not focus on my arm..just try to do the best that I can and be careful. I don't need to be lifting weights to build muscle just need to tone. bizi

good job at getting back to the gym, Bizi! hey i couldnot hold out 5 minutes in a beginning anything class.
i am glad the therapists were helpful to you and advised about healing times. now it's just the patient part.... arghh, no pun intended. do take care. (((hugs))) ~ waves ~ who has "giggles" in various places ... sigh |
