I am watching the weather channel as it creeps north. I see that BF may be getting a heavy dose right now, and not far from Jacquie. We are on the line of divide; East of Interstate 81 at least not a direct hit.
One channel said winds will be worse then rain, now saying rain worse the winds. I am at the edge of the Pocono's Northeast of Interstates I 81 and I 80. Up really high in elevation, so I do worry about the winds....Out trees around us are so tall and the evergreens hold so much weight on the limbs with a shallow root base. The weight of the rain, and then wind on them is my real fear. Glad I am not in the city though were the roads and cellars will be flooded for sure. Tropical storm Agnus in 1992 had the city under water 2 stories high. This week they did not even shut the flood gates, I don't get that. I guess they feel the river level so far is not a threat. Where do you put 6,7,8 inches of rain, plus the streams? I know one thing, I will be busy with insurance claims again this week.

Hi Di
i am far from the threat of Irene but i appreciate you starting this thread. i too am concerned about Steve - left him a profile message earlier but i am guessing he might be experiencing power outage. i was also wondering if Neurotalk might at some point go down and posted my concerns in this thread: Irene... potential impact on Neurotalk servers? i hope you are safe Di... those trees do sound scary... but i'm thinking this also... those would be resinous trees yes, so they might be quite flexible... and bend/lean, rather than break or tear away completely at the root. i lived in the subtropics for ages and there were tons of areas where there were pines all rooted, but slanted almost to the ground from hurricane force winds. a bit of a funny sight. i am really hoping that thing will disorganize quickly due to the recent landfall and degrade into a tropical storm and down. i am following the info on internet only, mostly forecasts and satellite views, some commentary. the reporting on it here in europe is extremely limited. sending you everyone else in Irene's path hugs and good vibes ~ waves ~ |

Thanks for checking on that Waves.
Yes I think that Steve may be without power already and mother hen is concerned that he has all he needs to get through a few days without elec. Enough on his mind, now to worry about this storm I wish I could help. I am really getting my anxiety going and we are not in the direct path....terrible thing to be this worked up. Actually teary, that is not normal. Maybe I should watch a movie until it really needs to be monitored... I have netflix, should find something. did my laundry alll morning so that kept me busy awhile. Battened down the hatches outside. We have a gas stove and will not be affected like the coast so service should be okay as long as water in the ground does not break a line. All our wires are overhead, so it is a matter of how long power will be off if limbs and trees come down. Our water and sewage will be fine as far as I know. Not sure about Jacquie though. She is going to have a bumpy ride so glad her family is with her. The boys have work off after 11pm tonight and we will sit and watch the storm.

i hear you about the anxiety. sometimes makes me get teary too... and other weird things... ugh.
my anxiety is through the roof too the past week. it isn't all about Irene but it's all in there. right now i'm having to pace my breathing out it's horrid. i hope you find a nice relaxing movie. glad you will have family around you tonight. right now i mostly want to be alone but it is also sort of reassuring to know my mom is in the next room. i am really worried about Bobby right now too, she is so isolated and her deliveries got cancelled... i can only assume it was groceries but i don't know. anyway, they told her she'd get a discount next time! well what good is THAT - she needs supplies before the hurricane not after!!!! anyway take care... blow that storm away ~ waves ~ |

The hurricane is on the coast of my State, but I am doing fine so far. I'm just getting wind gusts, and rain.
It is very humid. It's 98% on my Oregan Scientific weather device. I can smell the rain inside the house. The humidity is 42% inside,so it's not that bad. BF |

Hi,
TV and places on the internet are reporting 1,000,000 people (630,000 customers) without power -- mostly in N.C and Virginia. The storm is still active so the workers cannot get out yet. I hope the storm passes so people can have what they need. M. |

So glad to see this thread. Please stay safe folks.
I'm not near this threat, or at least I'm not supposed to be. Donna |

OH STEVE WONDERFUL
I feel so much better now. Gives me hope that we will dodge the bullet too. The Power trucks are lined up by the dozens along I -81 in Scranton area today. Our one friend that is with the Power company had said the company was going to shut down the grid if it gets real bad to avoid transformer surges from the trees and wind. My nephew in the national guard got called out to the Phila area. They left about supper time after a long day at work. I hear you about the humidity Steve. It is only 68* out but the sweat was running off as we double checked the generators. I put the air conditioner back on. You swear you do smell the ocean! But, I am really glad to see you posting, now just to get Jacquie through it all. We still have no real rain to speak of, a few bands around us. Check in later, di
