Default New Diet Drug contains topiramate.

Hi,

1 The FDA approved Qsymia yesterday, the second new diet drug in a month.
Qysmia is a combination of Phentermine (an old appetite suppressant) and topiramate (Topamax.)
Topamax works well for some people; for others, it does not work well at all.

2 The other new diet drug, Belviq, has some SSRI properties.

Default appetite suppressant effect of topiramate, and other side effects

people most often lose weight on topiramate. with some of those it probably happens as a side effect of a side effect - i.e. violent nausea & vomiting ... very unpleasant way to go. but it does reduce appetite for many, sometimes nixes appetite (i.e. produces anorexia). (that is not the same as the eating disorder, A. Nervosa.)

here, Topamax is prescribed sometimes for Bulimia or resistant binge eating, to assist with behavioral therapy.

i have just been prescribed Topamax to replace gabapentin as a migraine prophylactic. i told my neuro i hope to goodness it can pull some of the pounds off that Zyprexa, in its time, put on me.

so far i'm still on a baby dose, and notice no change in appetite one way or another.

Hi, Waves,

I was on Topamax for about 10 days. Pdoc had me titrate slowly. At 20 mgs I was feeling the benefit of not feeling hungry. I did not get the nausea, but I got what seemed like all the other side effects. I had to call pdoc to ask to get off it.

It can be a wonderful med. I hope it helps you.

I take a 100 mg of topamax. And I do pretty good on it.

I am not sure it was what made me lose the weight, I think teh medformin
waDonnas what helped me.

That and healthy eating.
