What we did is buy a Roku from Walmart. It was $49.99. It is a device that allows you to stream content from the internet to your tv. Our wireless router sends the signal to the tv, like how it does to my laptop. The Roku was a one-time fee to purchase it, no monthly fees. We pay $7.99 for Netflix streaming. Or you could watch on your computer or laptop if you don't want to get a Roku. I've never done the DVD by mail thing so I have no experience with that.
I have my tv on right now and am looking for you BF so you can know what content is available. There are 80 epiosdes of the Original Star Trek with Captain Kirk. There's 177 episodes of TNG. There are 173 episodes of Deep Space Nine. There's 168 episodes of Voyager. And then 97 episodes of that Star Trek:Enterprise that I was telling ya'll about last night. All commercial free. It's trekkie heaven. I love watching an episode right before I fall asleep. It helps me wind down & relax.
Hey BF, I don't know if you're into retro type stuff but we've been enjoying watching Leave it to Beaver as a family.
Editing to add that the Roku is small. I just measured mine. It's 5" x 5" and 1" tall. It is a fraction of the size of a DVD player. It sits on top the tv and takes up little space.
Also, I forgot to say that I've never been to a convention but I bet it's an awesome experience. When I was in high school I had this book that had all the schematics and drawings of where everything was located on the TNG ship.
