wine 8 hours before routine blood work at the lab?

Hi,

The instructions for blood work at the lab in the morning say "fasting."
Do you think that it is ok that i ate a meal around 9:00 p.m. and then had a five oz glass of wine at 3:00 a.m?
My appointment is at 11:00 a.m.

I suppose that I should get to bed so that I can get to the lab for my appoint.
HA. :ROTFLMAO: HA. :ROTFLMAO: HA.

(Bedtime . . . . right . . . . I am wide awake.)

Hmmm, I don't know how that could effect bloodwork. Sorry you were up last night, too.

how did it go?

Mari 12-24-2012 03:05 PM

Hi,

I got there 45 mins late but it was o.k.
The tech made a weird comment about how I was getting a lot drawn. I explained that my doc is thorough.

My doc will have the results in two working days and I have an appointment with her Friday, Jan 4.

parents

Hi,

My sister said that Mom and Dad cancelled Christmas dinner for tomorrow. They both went to bed early with fevers.
I am worried about them.
I wonder also how this affects their visit here Thurs Dec 27.

It sounds as if they are taking care of themselves. I hope they feel better.

Awww, so sorry to hear your parents are sick Mari. I hope the blood work is good. I hate going in and having blood drawn. It's even harder for my son. I hope that you have a Merry Christmas/Happy Holiday & Happy New Year in spite of things....♥

My sister and one of my brothers talked to my mom around the same time today. Mom told them that she feels "icky," Dad was sleeping, and they both still have fevers.

I told my sister to check on them again later in the day.

oh dear

I hope your parents both feel better soon Mari.

I wish i'd caught the post about the bloodwork and alcohol, i'd have suggested to move the appointment.

Being late works in your favor - makes it nearly 9 hours after the alcohol. Alcohol affects digestion, glycogen processing, hydration, electrolytes and thus potentially many lab values. That said, 4 oz is not much wine and 9 hours may be enough but I would inform your doctor as to 1. time you ate, 2. time of wine, 3. time of blood draw, and let her do the math... as to whether she needs another draw.

If there are abnormal values, a proper fasting draw to confirm them would probably be a good idea. Many tests require 10-12 hour fasts. If you are ever uncertain, call the lab and ask. they know how long of a fast is sufficient for each test.

FYI, I personally avoid all alcohol 24 hours before a blood draw. i do realize you had a very unusual coincidence here.

I hope your Christmas was good other than your folks being ill. My dad has also come down with something this year and was running a fever but he is improving. I hope your folks follow suit.

Take care :hug::hug::hug:

~ waves ~ sorry about not catching this in time to have been more helpful

Waves,

Thanks.

The mdoc will request blood work that the ER took a week or so ago. It had been hours since I ate -- at least 9 hours. She will have that blood draw in front of her when she looks at the blood work from Monday.

I will tell her about the wine. I think she is mostly following or looking for certain things. Maybe those are not affected by alcohol. If they are, she can run the test again.
I feel stupid because common sense might tell a person not to drink before a blood draw and I could have looked it up on line but I had spent the day before completely rearranging the living room and tossing out stuff that did not fit in the room in preparation for my parents's visit. I missed my sleep window that night -- kept working right through it and thought maybe wine would be a good idea for a chance at sleep. I ended up sleeping for four hours.

The ER sent me home with the blood work. I even looked up two irregularities on-line trying to see what was going on. Monday I looked at the sheet again and saw the complete first and last name of a different person.
Someone else has my blood work!!!
I hope that their sheet has all results in the good range. :)
