Default Yesterday Derrick was Bitten at Work

Man what a day.

Am I glad my husband agreed to take him to work. So I could sleep a little
later. I was a little more rested.

I knew it was going to be a much longer night.

But not the extra problem.

Derrick called me at 11:30 and he had been bitten by a cat at work.
And they wanted him seen in the ER or urgent care. So i went to
pick him up. They told me were the center was that knew about their
workers comp. So off we went, to sit in that room for a hour to be seen.

Then another 1/2 hour at least to see a doctor. Thats what the flu and
the other things in our area are doing to the hospitals and urgent cares.
But I wasn't surprised.

Then we went to get a antibiotic and some stuff to keep it wrapped and
then to eat lunch. And to so some wasting time.

Because he still wanted to go to the game that night whether he thought
he could play or not. It wasn't till game time, that he decided to try the
scrimmage. But not the practicing.

Which was fine with me.

He isn't going to practice today. And is worried about the rest of the
week for his strength training and swimming. So we will see.

Oh and he was good on a tetanus shot it was 9/09.

Heart Hey Donna

Dear Donna,

Sorry to hear about Derrick's cat bite, how unpleasant! and those long waits to be seen. Good that it is taken care of now and he was feeling up to the game... good sign. I hope the bite heals well and quickly.

I hope you get another opportunity for a rest up day. Sorry this one went berserk on you...

sending you and Derrick good thoughts

Red face

hope he feels well enough to go about his daily routine. Wonder if this will make him afraid of cats?
I am afraid of dogs after I was bitten by one.

Well I am not positive but a good sign was he picked his cat up last night.

And he has plans to return to work tuesday. And I hope things will go good
there.

They will work with him and help him to get over it hopefully.

It was in a area that the cats are new, and not many people are allowed
in there.

So if anything else it will take a while before he will go back in there.

Heart oh good, and ... gloves for new cats? i mean on the people not the paws

Dear Donna,

Sounds like overall Derrick is taking this well. I am glad. I kinda thought he would be "ok" in this sense actually. He has been working with animals, including cats for a long time, and he loves animals. I just can't imagine him developing a sudden fear of cats. He knows these things can happen, especially with rescued animals, which may be not-so-tame. Some rescuees are also abandoned animals with history of abuse. All these animals are very wary and and any perceived threat will get attacked. I'm sure Derrick knows this from working at the shelter.

Anyway, I agree his picking up Christina seems positive, along with his planning to go back to work Tuesday. I don't think it is such a bad thing if he doesn't go in the area with the new cats for a while. He can work up to that, lol.

Also, where was he bitten... on a hand/arm? at the shelter, do they wear gloves - or have the possibility to do so - when handling the newer animals? i think i would if i were handling street cats, so to speak... until the cats gain enough trust in the people there to lessen their guard and defensive behavior. they are used to having to be "tough" cats.

Waves

I don't have a clue about gloves. But I think he will be asking if he doesn't
already know.

But its on his arm, and we are watching it tonight. It looks a little red to
me and might look a little swollen.
My husband doesn't agree that it looks swollen, and he things it looks
red because it was covered. So we will see how he feels in the morning.

As long as the pain doesn't keep him up I think he is okay tonight.
The ER is all that is open and I'd rather take him back where they
know what is going on.

But I will be listening and watching tonight.

When I broke up a fight between dd cat and the older one, older one reached back and bit my wrists two times deep. It got very red swollen and painful to use. For about a week it was nasty. They put their mouthes in dirty places. I had the tetanus, antibiotics, but it was a deep wound, not a nip. I think if he snapped it wouldn't have been as bad, but to the deep tissue I bawled like a baby. I think his eye sight he did. Not know it was me lifting him away.something in the saliva reacted to De once when she got nipped and abscessed. Need to keep an eye on it.
Hope he heals fast and is back up to speed.

Venting now:

I am so upset with Derrick's strength training teacher. Seems he doesn't
want to take a parents word that their student can't do something.

He is also the teacher for their adaptive gym class. So today when the
special ed. teacher wasn't there. He decided to yell at him because
he wasn't swimming and didn't have a note from a doctor saying he
couldn't swim or do strength training.

Gosh I don't think Derrick has ever asked for a exception to the rule.

I'm not sure what his problem is but I've had it.
