Unhappy computer savy waves?

time displayed for posts is wrong. The time here on the forums displayed is one hour earlier than my time zone. I went into the control panel and checked to see that it was still central time zone and it is. any suggestions on what to do. We have a new pc and are using windows 8. the time difference did not occur until we got this new computer. also there is a time difference on face book as well. not on my task bar, it reads the correct time.
any ideas?
thanks bizi

Heart Lots of ifs here, so mostly some questions, general suggestions

Hi Bizi,

I don't have Windows 8 but i googled it real quick and there is a daylight savings bug - not sure if this has been fixed or if it affects US regions but it does sound like a potential culprit. It does sound like the problem is with the computer time, not with other places on the internet as those settings were working for you before. If you were not having DS discrepancies with your old system, then you have the forum set up to automatically correct for it, based on your time zone. Your forum settings would not have changed - so leave them alone. Same with facebook.

Did you perchance have to correct the time manuallyfor daylight savings - for any reason, say, it did not change, or changed incorrectly?

Have you done a complete Windows Update since purchase, to download ALL the updates for your system? I don't know if this bug has been fixed, or when, but I have to get ready for pdoc right now - I can find out later for you and advise accordingly if someone else has not helped by then.

----------------------------

Meanwhile... if you have not done so, it would still be good to ensure you have all the updates for security reasons - this can be a process that includes several reboots because not all updates can be applied. It should be repeated until, when you run Windows Update, it doesn't find anything to install.

-------------------

To tinker with the time adjustments, open the Control Panel and go under Clock, Language & Region. From there I can't give precise intstructions but you should find an area where you set the time zone, and enable or disable whether the system automatically adjusts for daylight savings. You can play with it but I might wait until we know whether or not the daylight savings bug has been fixed.

------------------

I'm sorry i really have to run now! Maybe someone with hands-on experience with Win 8 will come along and be able to give better help. If not, I will be back.

I believe we have updated all of the systems but will ask jeff. thank you for looking that up we normally never adjust the times they do that automatically for us.The fact that it only does it for nt and facebook makes me suspicious.
I hope things went well for your pdoc appointment and that he has some suggestions to help you thru this.
(((((HUGS)))))
thank you for your help.

Bizi I am KO tonight.

Can you - or Jeff - also check the control panel in the time zone settings, and just let me know the current setting wrt daylight time adjustment - is automatic adjustment for daylight savings enabled, or not?

i appreciate your suspicion with NT and Facebook but relative times can be calculated in different ways. NT & facebook may use your baseline computer time. Other sites may use your IP address to detect your location -- in this case they would not be affected by system settings.

It really sounds to me like the source of the problem is your system settings (possibly in combination with that bug if it affects North American time zones.

i will do more checking in the morning. i had a really awful session and i got lost multiple times on the way home. i completely missed both episodes of the closer. i sprung for a cab because due to my last mishap i ended up such that i'd have had to wait another hour wait in a cold, unpopulated area. what really made my evening was absolutely *having* to use the subway restrooms and nearly peeing myself before i could get their stupid automated things to work.

i have asked for a symbolic cup of tea. i have yelled at my poor parents who didn't deserve it but i got frustrated trying to have a simple conversation with simple concepts that weren't happening. i know i am smart but if i were a bit dumber right now it would help everyone aroundme because i am too smart too quick too fast and everyone better keep pace OR ELSE.

lithium will make me dumber ... how nice eh.

Heart something to try. easy to do. easy to undo.

Dear Bizi...

Thanks for checking back! Something strange is certainly going on in this "life" .

I tried to find out more about the daylight savings bug, and it seems to be in reference to the previous system (Win 7) and for non-US timezones. It would also seem that since fixes/updates were released for those systems any similar issue would have been integrated in Win 8. I no longer have a friend at Microsoft that I can ask to find out about this so I'll keep poking around but meanwhile...

This is something very simple you could try:
  • Disable the "automatically adjust for Daylight Savings" ... set it so that the computer does NOT adjust for daylight savings.

  • CHECKPOINT 1
Record whether your taskbar time is correct, 1 hour fast, or 1 or slow.
Do the same for the time on forum posts.

  • IF your taskbar time was set back an hour, then, manually, adjust the time so that is is once again correct.

  • CHECKPOINT 2
Record whether post times are now correct, one hour fast, or one hour slow.

Let me know the observations made at CHECKPOINTS 1 & 2.

no rush. and it's no hardship either. i have good moments like now, when math and logic seems to help me. it feels grounding somehow. so i will be back to follow up with you on this, if you are up for it. i'll try to check the other forum too in case someone comes along with a novel for you.

I'm pretty sure its still on warranty.

I sure hope it is at least.

I can't afford that right now too.

Red face

thank you for writing waves. I don't know how to do that.
I am just going to forget about it.
Jeff is the administrator for this computer and he is too busy to bother him with this.
I wish I knew how to do this, I could have done it on xp.
