Default alprazalam (xanax) .25.

My primary nurse practioner gave me 10 of these for the procedure or whenever I needed these for tomorrow.

Question: How soon should it work? I mean in minutes or hours?

I had to take one just a few minutes ago. And I realize it shouldn't
that fast. But I need a gauge for tomorrow.

I am getting scared thinking of what is going to happen again.

I am wondering if there is a way to have enough in me tomorrow.
So I might not be too anxious.

I sometimes wake up at 3 or 4 am in the morning. Anyone see a problem
taking one then. And again at 8:30 or 9:00am. When I take my antibiotic
for the heart murmur.

Heart Should be ok to take as needed

Good luck tomorrow Donna. I will be thinking of you and praying for you.
I think it is fine to take one or two when you wake up early and a few more at 9:00. Lets see 10 pills at .25 would be 1.0 mg for 4 pills. I don't see any problem taking these as needed really. My friend was prescribed 10mg Xanax in one pill and took them a few times a day so you would not be overdosing or anything. Just get yourself to a comfortable level and keep yourself there. They work fast. Within 20-30 minutes max. They last for about 4 hours.
Sending love, peace and positive support your way. Let us know what happens? You will be ok.
Love,
Brain

Thanks Brain

I had already started to feel some results from the one I took.
So I was afraid it was just my brain. And I had been having a panic
attack. I used to take these. But never needed more than the .25mg.

But it would help so much to be able to take a little extra.

Heart

Dear Donna,

I haven't taken Xanax per se but I've taken Lorazepam which acts very nearly as quickly. However, the effect timing will vary from person to person in any event.

It was a very good idea to try one today as a a "gauge."

Today take note of the following:
-- time of initial effect - when you start feeling somewhat relaxed
-- peak time - ie, when you feel most relaxed, before the feeling starts to subside.

Xanax should peak in ~ 1-2 hours.
I could feel my lorazepam fairly decently in about 20 mins - I'd expect Xanax should be similar based on the similar absorption times of the two drugs. this is just to give you an idea. For you personally, these times could be shorter or longer.

Quote:

Absorption

Following oral administration, alprazolam is readily absorbed. Peak concentrations in the plasma occur in 1 to 2 hours following administration.
It is ok to repeat dose if after 20mins (or your time for initial effect you don't feel much improvement. however, based on today's experiment, it might be better to take more than 1 pill at the same time. It also depends how long the procedure is, whether you might want to "stagger" them for longer effect?

Xanax is not very sedating as these meds go, but if you take too much for acute anxiety, once the anxiety-provoking situation has passed, and you relax, then you can find yourself getting sleepy.

IMPORTANT: Xanax can affect your attention and reaction times without your being aware of it, so you should not drive under the influence of this med. Please have someone drive you where you need to go and then back home. Be safe.

I apologize for asking as I think I must have missed it where you posted this... might I ask what procedure you will be using this for? Is it a dental procedure?

Good luck with everything. Be ok.

I'm having a breast biopsy at 10am. In Lafayette, IN.

Thought I better put that. Anyway, its supposed to take one
hour. My problem is the last one I had. They could put me to
sleep. This time they can't, and I am not liking the sound of the
procedure.

Its not the pain and things after. I can remember that pretty well
anyway. So I know what to expect. Its the procedure itself.

My husband is scheduled to take me. But of course this stupid mess
of a snow storm has thrown a big monkey wrench in for me. I'm now
concerned, he is still in Kokomo trying to clean up the ouse he was working
on. I had no problem, till the roads are so bad.

I would rather he stay safe tonight. And come and meet me in town, tomorrow. And we leave my vehicle in town. And get it the next day when we take Derrick to the Ortho. This sounds good to me.

He so far isn't to receptive. I plan to change his mind. I'm not even
sure I can get out tomorrow morning. But I'll be happier trying, knowing
he is safe.

So we will see. This is going to maybe make it even more stressful.
Probably one of the worst snow storms of the season for us. On the
worst timing. I will not wait. I will get there.

Donna,

Stay safe.

Perhaps the Xanax is not for the procedure itself. The MD will have medications for you when you get there. The Xanax is probably to help you with tonight.

Be careful driving.

Donna,

The reports I am reading say that your area is expected to get snow Monday.
It will be O.K. that you cancel the procedure.

Heart Donna, sending good thoughts

Dear Donna,

I realize this has got to be a bomb of a stressor, and I realize you'd probably like it over with.

However, just think how you are wanting to keep your husband safe, without his driving at night in snow? We have similar worries about you driving yourself to another town - in mountains of snow *AND* emotionally distraught.

I agree with Mari, that they will allow you to postpone the procedure if you cannot get there safely. Postponing will also give you a chance to resolve some of your uncertainties with regard to the procedure and procedure prep, such as:
  • find out whether you will receive full, twilight or no sedation.
  • call your NP for more specific, medical counsel on the Xanax, including whether she gave it for the day before or few days before building up to the procedure. (If you will be sedated, please ask specifically about pre-op use - how much, when to take, etc.)
I am sending you lots and lots of love and gentle hugs, right now because I realize you are a pretty determined lady, and might just decide to keep the appointment at this point, even at the cost of driving through a blizzard. If you go out today I hope the roads are kind to you. Of course, I hope the outcome is all clear - then you will REALLY be able to relax! I am sending good thoughts and will say a prayer for you too. Do try be safe, and hang in there, ok?

We will be here for you. I too will be checking in.

I think this may be a typo and that you mean 1mg in one pill not 10mg in one pill?

I just want to emphasize that members should always follow the prescription guidelines on dosing ie only take the med the way your doctor has prescribed it!

I hope you are staying safe Donna and that all will go well
