Arrow Foods You Don't Have to Buy Organic

Hi,

When I am food shopping, I am aware that certain fruits and veggies are best bought organic because of pesticides used to grow them.
Before shopping today, I looked up which foods were safe to buy non-organic.

These are the Clean 15 -- a list of foods that you do not have to buy organic:
http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART02984...y-Organic.html

Quote:
Of the fruit and vegetable categories tested, the following "Clean 15" foods had the lowest pesticide load, and consequently are the safest conventionally grown crops to consume from the standpoint of pesticide contamination:
Quote:
1 Onions
2 Sweet corn
3 Pineapples
4 Avocado
5 Cabbage
6 Sweet peas
7 Asparagus
8 Mangoes
9 Eggplant
10 Kiwi
11 Cantaloupe (domestic)
12 Sweet potatoes
13 Grapefruit
14 Papayas
15 Mushrooms
I bought whatever I could remember from the list that looked fresh:
one large onion, avocados, one cabbage, mangos, eggplant, kiwis, and sweet potatoes. Hubby will like the kiwis because they are something different.

Thanks for that article, Mari.
I like Dr Weil's articles a lot.

My daughter and I were just lamenting the cost of organic food here last night. I wish I could buy all organic and certified produce all the time. If I could I'd buy locally grown from our farmer's markets because it's nice to be able to talk to the farmers and get to know them and how they grow their goods. I grow a little of my own but no where near all I'd like to do. Some time back when I had more energy to do larger scale gardening, I used to read a permaculture website that was wonderful and helped me learn a bit about companion planting to keep the bugs away etc..

I never use chemicals, but I'm sure there's so much in the ground in the suburbs here already that it will never go away. I spend a lot of time out in the garden and in lawn generally weeding and lifting out things like the bindii (prickles) and everyone thinks I'm a bit silly. I get quite horrified when I see everyone around my area out with the roundup spray just to keep the edges tidy up their driveways. I find it absolutely horrible. It's more than horrible really. It's unacceptable.

Hi, Lara,
I agree that using Roundup is nasty.
That is cool that you have a planting gift.
When I was growing up my mother did gardening without chemicals. I wish I had her green thumb.

"Buy food labeled 100% organic. The US and Canadian governments do not allow manufacturers to label something 100% organic if that food has been genetically modified or been fed genetically modified feed. You may find that organic food is more expensive and different in appearance from conventional products."

Bobby,
That is good information.

The sweet corn on my list in the earlier post is genetically modified --as are most corn and most soy beans in our country.
