yep mine says it is best to take it on an empty stomach.
I just bought this expensive bottle. I was drinking kefir yogurt drink at night, same thing 4 oz on an empty stomach. I did that last year I think.
how long do you think I could wait to take it after my night meds?
do you think an hour would be long enough?

Bizi,

This is what Livestrong says:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/50...-without-food/
HOW TO TAKE THEM
Quote:
It is most beneficial to take probiotics just before or just after a meal, according to Serenity Aberdour, a naturopathic doctor.
The acids in your stomach can impede absorption of the probiotics.
The ideal time is after a meal, when the pH balance of your stomach is at its highest and acidity is at its lowest.
This allows more of the probiotic supplement to reach your intestine.
Apparently, you want to take them before or after a meal ---
--- (in other words, around the time of a meal).
(Do not take them at the same time as food.)
According to this, 45 minutes is good so one hour is fine.)

thank you so much. I was also trying to avoid them around my meds but maybe I don't need to worry about that.

Bizi,

Right.

You do not need to worry about the probiotics and the meds.

That's because some foods do interfere with absorption of probiotics - or destroy them before they reach the intestines.

Anything with refined sugar should be avoided at the same time as you take probiotics, this includes flavored yogurts and flavored Kefir unless they are artificially sweetened.

Coffee and tea must not be taken at the same time as probiotics.

Having Kefir on an empty stomach is not the same as having probiotics on an empty stomach. Kefir per se is a nutritious food. It contains probiotics. This also applies to regular yogurt and those "probiotics" which come in those yogurty-like mini-drinks, although Kefir is particularly rich. In all cases though, the plain versions allow for better absorption than the flavored kinds.

I sometimes occasionally use probiotic supplements (i.e. pill, powder or vial form). When I need to do this, I usually take them with plain white yogurt, i.e. a "probiotic-friendly" food.

Here, probiotics are routinely prescribed during and after antibiotic treatment to compensate for flora destroyed by the antibiotic. This is because antibiotics destroy natural intestinal flora, sometimes resulting in thrush or candida infections. This brings me to meds. Whenever you are given an antibiotic, take it at a different time/meal than your probiotic to get the most benefit out of the probiotic. Separate them by at least 2 hours. If you take the probiotic first, in vial/powder/pill form and without any food, then, 30 minutes before the antibiotic can suffice.

This site mentions some of these things (but not all), fwiw:

Default Passion Flower for anxiety?

Hi,

I saw this on Andrew Weil's site for help with anxiety (GAD):

Quote:
Supplements

B vitamins and magnesium can be helpful in dealing with the symptoms of anxiety.

Passion flower derivatives are effective as mild tranquilizers. Both tinctures and extracts are calming without being sedative and are useful adjuncts to programs of stress reduction.
He has other good suggestions too:
https://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART0069...-disorder.html

Exclamation Passiflora has benzodiazepine activity, and possibly narcotic/opioid activity too!

The derivatives that work as tranquilizers indeed do so because they are pharmacologically active, so it would be more accurate, and certainly safer, to consider them herbal medications rather than supplements! Doctor Weil should know this!

There are multiple chemicals present in this plant. Each extract, depending on the plant parts used, will have slightly (or very) different pharmacologic activity.

From http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2322858/:
Quote:
Recently, Svenningsen et al., (2006) have found that apigenin, an active ingredient of passionflower, binds to central benzodiazepine receptors
Additionally, according to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7906886, the monoflavonoid chrysin present in some extracts is also a partial BZD agonist with anxiolytic but not sedative activity.

What does all this imply? Depending on doses taken:
1. cross-tolerance with benzodiazepines
2. dependence with extensive use
3. possible augmented sedation with benzo's and other sedatives at higher doses

Various studies suggest some extracts may act on the opioid receptors, based on on observed analgesia and attenuation of morphine withdrawal. (I found no studies that had attempted to isolate this mechanism of action with certainty.)

------------------------

Caution should always be used when taking any herbal medication since they are not necessarily free of side effects.

Special care should always be taken when adding herbal treatments to standard pharmacological treatments. Interactions can occur at many levels. Some herbs have a directly additive effect, some are be incompatible, and some increase or decrease clearance of drugs, for instance.

Waves,

I am sorry.
Usually his web site is pretty good.
Passion Flower would not work for those of us taking benzos. And for everyone (on meds or not) it needs be taken under the care of a practitioner.

Default still no studies on the Ketogenic Diet

Hi,

Pyschology Today's article says that we still have no good study on whether the Ketogenic Diet (low carb, high fat) helps people with bipolar.

I wish we had more information because there is some sense to the idea.

I like the picture here of how nerves in the brain work:
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/...polar-disorder

Also, this discussion:
Quote:
. . . .as insulators in the brain, decreasing the ability of the neurons to send out out-of whack sodium messages leading to neurotoxic calcium overload.

This calcium overload is speculated to be the cause not only of seizures, but also migraines and bipolar symptoms, which is why anti-seizure meds can be used to treat all three conditions.

Quote:
Many of our ancestors probably spent many a winter in ketosis, and other times lack of food or long fasts would have brought on brief periods of ketone body use in the brain too.
Maybe our brains work better if we spend time in ketosis.
Speculation, of course, but not an unimportant question to research further.
