Arrow Article: Anxiety Disorders Diagnosed More Often in Women Than Men

Quote:
Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, chair of the department of psychology at Yale, says one reason women are more anxious is that they tend to take responsibility for other peoples’ happiness, especially their children’s and spouse’s. “It’s kind of a Catch-22, because they can’t always do anything about them,” says Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema, author of “The Power of Women” and other books.

Women also seem to have a more active “uh oh” signal in the brain that registers when they know they’ve made a mistake, according to a study published this month in the International Journal of Psychophysiology.

I am not to sure what to think of this.
Perhaps there is a biological difference between me and women or perhaps the study was flawed or otherwise incomplete.

Hi Mari,

May I ask, what is it about the "findings" that you feel does not apply in your case?

Default Also...

I found this observation interesting (same article, last paragraph):

Quote:
Researchers also wonder why the male high worriers didn’t have such a pronounced ERN signal. Dr. Moser speculates that it might have been different if the test involved money or competition, rather than simple letter recognition. “It could be that the men didn’t give a hoot and the women were more conscientious,” he says.
I wonder what sorts of results would have emerged if the same or different groups had done several distinct tests, centered around different themes... socio-economic status, nurturing of others, body-image, bread-winning ability for instance, physical strength.

Doing such tests in parallel might flush out differences caused by social conditioning. It might be quite difficult, though, to construct similar tests in such a way as to isolate the desired themes.

Hi, Waves,

I did not proof read.
I meant to type "men."
The sentence should read thus:

Perhaps there is a biological difference between men and women or perhaps the study was flawed or otherwise incomplete.

OH!!! LOL!

Thanks Mari! Ya'd think it might have occurred to me there was a typo, but it... didn't! The "me" made enough sense I guess, even if it didn't say "between me and other women" ... LOL... silly me! Oops... no pun intended, honest.

I do think that the study was too generic, as per my previous post.

I'd bet some differences can be accounted for by gender roles in our society, but this does not preclude the possibility of biological differences existing as well.
