'Sorry that I did not spell it right.

It is a docking station so that I can easily power up my lap top -- it is handy. I like it because I understand it and it works.

Then the docking station connects to the bigger monitor a little like this -- the lap top and monitor and my lap top show the same screen (although one could set them to show different screens I believe.)

I hear you!. I have PC trouble too, both with windows 8 and Microsoft word. My son is coming over after work to get me straightened out. Sometimes I really dislike the technical world we created. More trouble than it is worth sometimes. Today I found out about banking on line, paying bills that way. Too expensive to do...back to the PO stamps....ginnie:hug:

Our bank doesn't charge any fees to do banking on line.

Many utilities - phone, garbage, electric, gas .. you can set up on their website for the bill to be paid automatically from your bank account and it is free to pay that way... you can sign up for email notices of the bill payments..

I tried to find a listing of banks with free bill pay.. but so far no luck.. this is what I did find..
For all Bank of America personal accounts, there is no fee to use Bill Pay.

Certainly beats huddling over a laptop!!! Nice big screen, too... much easier on the eyes. And I'm thinking the docking station probably makes your machine run a bit better/faster, no? Not sure of the power considerations there. :)

Are you still fighting off Seattle?

I got my new system today, so I have a laptop running Windows 8 now. I might be able to help you ditch Seattle, depending when/where that pic comes up... if you want to tell me. I could not tell from what you said what you meant by "opening picture". Does it comes up before the Start screen and then go away?

I have got my machine basically workable. Ghhhh! Went nuts with my (rather old) ADSL modem refusing to be used by Win 8. I finally had to hook it up a different way than with the other machine... but at least I don't have to replace it!

It's been a long day. The antenna tech came as well as the laptop delivery... when it rains it pours.

Grrr I am incredibly SICK of arbitrary touches "waking up" the start screen and why did stupid setup have to force a UK keyboard layout for English anyway. Half my special characters are in funky places and I have absolutely NO use for a £ sign!

yes. But earlier versions at least up to XP did NOT restrict keyboard layouts during setup.

I've now got rid of the stupid start screen waking up every 3 seconds as well. It was a dragging-from-border thing.

Whew. Much better. :)

Interesting about Wednesdays being your long day. Is that a choice or just the way your schedule is this semester? I have often made Wednesdays my longest work day but only because it seemed to work well for me that way.

The long Wednesday is mostly by choice to make up for my not working any early mornings.
THis Wednesday was longer than usual because of a meeting that started at 7:30 pm and went until 8:45 pm.

The electronic thingy on the thermostat tells me the temperature outside and inside but the reading for inside is clearly not correct. When it is cold, it shows the inside temp higher than it really is.
(So for example, if it says 74 and I am freezing, I think that 77 is a good plan. (!!!?????!)
I set the heat to 77 degrees F. :eek:

I woke up a few mins ago to feeling too warm. Yuck. :(
I will open a door to cool down the place and then it will be too cold again. (At the time I am typing this, the Internet says it is 57 degrees F outside.)
I have no idea about the temp inside except that I am going to throw up if I do not open the door soon. :confused:

I did not sleep enough Mon or Tues night ----- certainly not enough to deal with Wednesday.

My sister is being generous,and is going to give me a refurbished computer for my birthday,and Christmas present. This computer that I'm on now is a 2002 Dell. It is starting to loose downloading capabilities. It's starting to loose Youtude music,and voice capabilities. It's kind of breaking up,and stopping,and starting voice,and music on Youtube.

She chose the computer with her computer expert friend. I've had this computer for about four years,and no one has touched it but me. BF:hug::hug::hug:

How do you feel about change? Sometimes I would almost rather stay with the old machine even though it is not doing a great job.

In general,I don't like change. With the new cellphones,computers,and etc.,etc.,they have five hundred million(I'm being silly)ways to do the same thing.

I do like youtube also,and it will be a pleasure to get it back,and sounding normal. This computer is going to be history very soon. It's wearing out. It's had two former owners. BF:hug::hug::hug:

You and the computer were friends for a while, but maybe it is time for you to part ways.

Do you ever give objects names?
I have done that but not lately that I can think of.
. . like naming your car or a piece of equipment?

I know people who do give nick-names to various things. I don't know why,but I've never gotten around to that. I may do things like that in the future. BF:hug::hug::hug:

I don't have Windows 8,but I switched from Windows XP to Windows 7 on Thursday afternoon.

My old Dell is history,and I have a newer model computer. It's much faster,and I see things that I thought I lost.

My sister gave this to me as a Christmas,and birthday present. I thank my sister for this. BF:hug::hug::hug:

lessons in using a lap top
 

When my lap top sort of froze, someone showed me how to remove the battery to kind of reset it. They did not put the battery back in very well.

It took the better part of the next day for me to learn that the battery has to be solidly IN THE LAP TOP in order for the computer to work. :cool: :eek:
