Sadlyme, I agree wtih Mari, that it's easy to medicate those awful racing thoughts and the anxiety. Like Mari it nearly did me in too. The only thing is I never really realized how much the thoughts were racing until the medication kicked in and I saw what it was really like to be in control over your mind. I thought everyone was like I was and fighting to maintain a coherent LINE of thoughts. I was so bad with it I couldn't PRAY in one sentence without having my thoughts overlapping each other, it was just terrible, but my T advised me that I should start on Lithium and I refused viaing for an atypical anti-psychotic like risperdal which helped but gave me weight gain and tingling lips.

She then prescribed abilify and that was when I finally found relief. It was amazing the difference between the way I was and the way I feel and think now. Good luck to you today, I hope your wife will listen and be understanding towards your situation. It's hard to try to explain what's going on in your head sometimes but having your Pdoc there will help you to stay grounded and having your wife there will help you to focus on what you feel you need to get across to her. :)

Best wishes to you Sadlyme. :)

Bump for Bizi

:bump:

Hi Bizi,
At the top of this thread a year and a half ago I listed some meds than are prescribed for sleep.

Do you sleep with socks on?
I do.
I wonder why socks are part of sleep hygiene.
I wear them because my feet are cold.

thanks mari, yes I do sleep with socks on unless I am having a hot flash then they go off.
I also take magnesium at night as a muscle relaxer, I used to have restless legs before ambien...don 't any longer.

They mention sleep hygeine,
-regualar sleep cycle,
-regualar exercise,
-exposure to sun in day time,
-avoidance of bright light at night,
-avoidance of heavy meals or drinking 3 hours before bedtime,
-enhance sleep environment,
-avoidance of caffeine alcohol, nicotine,
-relaxing routine,
-warm bath and socks.

and CBT.

Then the handouts talk about meds for sleep:

--Antihistamines.

--Benzodiazapine Receptor Agonist
(Lunesta, Ambien) (The other benzos are recommended for short term only.)

--Melatonin receptor agonist
(Rozerem)

--Sedating Anti-depressants (NIH says side effects are a concern.)
(Trazadone, Amitriptlyine, Mirtazipine)

--Sedating anticonvulsants (NIH says side effects are too risky to use these for insomnia.)
(Seroquel, Zyprexa)

Drugs in development:
---Other GABA receptor agents

---Serotonin (5-HT 2) antagonists

Hi,
I am bumping this information I gathered in 2007 after hubby attended mini presentation with a buddy.

Maybe this is helpful.

My wish is that people have restful comfortable sleep.

I take all of my meds at nightnow so they combined put me to sleep but I think the klonipin is the one that does the trick.
200mg lamictal
120mg of geodon with out food
1mg of klonipin

wish there was something that would help you with your sleep issues.

In the past I've taken 1-2 benedryl if I can't sleep. It's really helped me. I guess any of the sleep meds work best if you try to get on a regular schedule though.

Mari, I saw the original date of this thread... Wow, you have been dealing with this for an awfully long time!:hug::hug:

Sadly, I am familiar with all too many of these meds for sleep, sleep hygiene, and supplements as well. Here is more info on timing, light/dark therapy, etc.

I thought Seroquel was quite effective for several sleep issues ranging from insomnia to circadian rhythm sleep disorder to even excessive REM. The downside was weight gain and for some people, they cannot tolerate it due to side-effects or from having TD.

i feel for anyone with chronic insomnia.

my sleep problems are more tied to psychology and/or an inbred or genetic nightowl tendency... it's not so much about if, but about when i sleep and whether it agrees with the rest of the world.

that said, i've used bunches of different things ranging from antihistamines to antipsychotics and several kinds of mood stabilizers and anxiolytics in the middle. sometiems the meds i'm on help me sleep, just as a matter of course, and waking up is the bigger problem.

Sending hugs to all that need them for insomnia.
