You might try rotating between the pain killers and another med.

Surgeons are usually understanding, and realize people's recovery time and pain tolerance differ greatly. You can call for a refill if you start to run out within a reasonable time frame. Donna's idea of alternating with ibuprofen isn't a bad one, if you are allowed to take it. It doesn't prohibit you from taking the pain med prescribed.

But I would call if your pain doesn't start improving anyway. You want to make sure that you are healing properly and nothing's wrong. Once it's time to take the bandages off or they fall off on their own, being able to take a look at the surgical site will give you more evidence of how things are coming along.

Do you have a follow up with your surgeon? If so, when?

Bobby,
You mentioned taking Oxycontin previously. Did this doctor prescribe the Oxycontin for you? Also, what type of pain are you dealing with?

You can call your surgeon or primary doctor and let them know the pain meds aren't working very well for you..
