Smile I ordered a kit to test my DNA for my family heritage.

I just ordered a DNA test to be completed, via a saliva sample.
It will show my heritage break down.
I am excited about this....have never really known for sure what my heritage was...percentages of this or that.
excited!

I did the DNA test kit from ftDNA, it's alot of fun to explore your genealogy.

I ordered a test kit for my wife, she always heard through her family grapevine that there was some native American line, but the DNA test shows her to be 100% Western European.

My sister had that done, and I think that she said that we are 91%, or 93% British Isle, mainly Scottish. BF

Question

Will it show the MTHFR mutation?

This is becoming more common than previously thought.

Some forms of depression are due to faulty methylation of
folic acid (which is the inactive form of methylfolate). There is a high dose methylfolate
on RX called Deplin that is used for some depressions.

MTHFR also impacts B12, with the mutation, you can become very low in B12 levels. Methylcobalamin is involved in many body metabolic needs including myelin repair and making melatonin from serotonin.

That IS really exciting Bizi!

I look forward to hearing about your results, how long did they say it would take once they have the sample?

hi mrs d. No I think it is strictly your family heritage results, my lineage I guess. nothing medical. at least that is what they said. I do not suffer from depression thank god!

Kay,
They said there is a back log, that it would take 2 extra weeks to come in.
I don't know how long it will take to get back. So we shall see.
bizi
It cost $90, I can get you the website if anyone is interested.

Some of the DNA testing places will give the raw data and SNPs for methylation, but do not explain its meaning to the owner.

This is because the FDA was pressured by doctors, and put restrictions on the medical "interpretation" of results.

Some of our PN posters easily found internet explanations for the various mutations, that were included in their printouts.

This is a very important mutation because doctors continue to ignore it. When it first was published about 10 yrs ago, it was suggested to be uncommon at about 10%. Now some researchers and specialist doctors are suggesting that perhaps some populations go as high as 50%.

As far as your dollar value and worth for the results, the DNA methylation is far more valuable IMO than your
ancestry.

This page explains a lot- where to get the tests, different test types - what they tell you..
This is the 2015 version of the link posted previously..
215: Most bang for the DNA buck | The Legal Genealogist

I thought these DNA tests would be similar to the ones on the PBS ancestry show, very detailed , but that is not the case... maybe for PBS that is a higher level of testing for the show..
