Confused I can't take much more....................

I have to go back to the Dentist tomorrow, the pain is horrid again. The back tooth next to the bottom one he took out is loose, it is a capped or crown one - whatever.

They think I may have a dry socket on the bottom one. Whatever that is, and what the hell do they do for that, I'm afraid to ask.

This has been one hell of a long haul from sinusitis they thought, then cat scan of sinuses, 10 days of antibiotics, 7 hrs in the ER, 6 days of steriods to break the cycle of migraines from my PCP, to penicillin from the two teeth extracted from the Dentist.

My TMJ is really bad since the extractions too. None of my pain meds work.

Ice does help.

In between jaw/headaches I get done what I can.

Good thing I like yogart, soup, ice water, iced coffee, lemonade, ice cream, trying to keep the jaw rested.

Even taking Bayer aspirin and Excedrin Migraine. I am desperate at this point.

Sorry to whine, pass the cheese, can't eat it, but it sounds good. No wine for me either, afraid to have even one drink, might set off a headache.

Hugs, Nikko

You sound miserable.

Hi Nikko,

If my memory serves me correct, there is not much they do for a dry socket. It comes from smoking or sucking through a straw in the 12 or 24 hours after a tooth extraction. I've heard a dry socket is really painful but it won't last.

Dear Nikko,
Dry socket has to do with the blood not clotting right over the hole:
http://www.dentalgentlecare.com/dry_socket.htm

Quote:
Prevention of dry socket:

-Women who use birth control pills or have their teeth removed in the first 22 days of the menstrual cycle are twice as likely to develop dry socket after an extraction.

-Avoid drinking through a straw

-Avoid smoking, it contaminates the extraction site

-Avoid excessive mouth rinsing, it interferes with blood clotting

-Keeping food from impacting in this area. Chew on the other side of your mouth and gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water after the first 24 hours.
Quote:
Treatment could include the following:

Medication applied to the site.

Clove oil technique.

Gauze with medication.

Additional home care instructions.

Applying topical anesthetic.

Alvogyl by Septodont
Mayo Clinic
Quote:
Treatment
Treatment of dry socket is mainly geared toward reducing its symptoms, particularly pain. Treatment includes:

-Medicated dressings. This is the main way to treat dry socket. Your dentist or oral surgeon generally packs the socket with medicated dressings. You may need to have the dressings changed several times in the following days. The severity of your pain and other symptoms determines how often you need to return for dressing changes or other treatment.

-Flushing out the socket. Your dentist or oral surgeon will flush the socket to remove any food particles or other debris that has collected in the socket and that contributes to pain or infection.

-Pain medication. Talk to your doctor about which pain medications are best for your situation. If over-the-counter pain relievers aren't effective, you may need a stronger prescription pain medication.

-Self-care. You may be instructed how to flush your socket at home to promote healing and eliminate debris. To do this, you'll be given a plastic syringe with a curved tip to squirt water, salt water, mouthwash or a prescription rinse into the socket. You may need to continue to do this daily for three or four weeks.

Ask the dentist about the aspirin you have been taking.
I was told NOT to take any aspirin when I had my wisdom teeth pulled
.

I was also told to eat only plain (no pieces) ice cream or froz yogurt (I'm lactose intolerant) for at least 24 hours after the pulling. I did it for 48 hours to be safe.

I heard bad stories about the pain of dry socket so I understand your pain a bit. The dentist will know how to handle it and will help you. Have no fear.

You have been through a long ordeal. I sounds like things will get wrapped up soon. Stay on the path. You will find a way to the land of the pain free.

too bad pot isn't legal....I am so sorry you have to be going through another ordeal and such a painful one...I guess your mother knows not to act up...
I hope she is being thoughtful but maybe that is too much to ask for.
I was surprised about the aspirin comment. I thought anti inflammatories were supposed to be great.
It will get better soon.

Mad

Thanks..........to all!

It seems as though the top tooth that was taken out is compeletly healed, that area was smaller.

The bottom was larger, but that too seems to be closing up well too.

I did smoke, I did keep the gauze there until the bleeding stopped. I rinsed everytime I had anything to eat, which has only been liquids like yogart, soup, etc.

I just took the Bayer on my own, thought that would be helpful, oops, I guess I should not of done that. I guess I need an anti-inflammatory.

I don't see how they could open the site now, although it does have a slit still and is still soft, not like the top. I hope they don't have to cut it open.

That tooth next to the bottom one is loose and I can't help but my teeth go together and it moves it. That crown has been there for about 20 yrs, I wonder what that looks like underneath.

I am still on the penicillin.

I still grind, so that doesn't help. I am trying to get the TMJ back under control with soft liquid foods.

Well my appt. is for 9:15am, it's only 6:15 am here.

I dread this. I really do. Well, if I am not back on later, you know something was done to put me down for the day, otherwise I will check in.

Mom has been good. Dirk has been great.

I am not taking the Topamax it gives me killer headaches, maybe because I am on 200 mg of Lamictal and maybe two mood stabilizers are too much for my body, ya think maybe?

Have to call my PCP on that one today too.

The oxycontin 20mg in the am and 20 mg in the pm doesn't touch the pain, I should just go back to percocet or vicoden even though they aren't time released they seem to work better, although my body pain is gone with the oxycontin. It is the lowest dose. I feel nothing when I take it. I don't know what the big deal is with this med and its addiction and all.

I am just at a total loss, the Dr's must think I am truly a certified nut case, I think I am. I hate to use the word nut, but I think I am at this point.

Then to top it all off, COPE called yesterday, but Dirk was on my phone and didn't realize the beep in was important. It was where I see my p-doc. I called back, but got no call back. I have no clue as to what they want.

I did send her all the info on what has been going on, so that could be it, maybe due to the meds I bet.

Catch you later. Sorry to go off here.

Happy Wednesday. Hugs, Nikko

Nikko, I wish this could be resloved, it sounds like an infection still going on. Even a dry socket should let up by now. the short term meds do help a toothache better then long term. ONe is chronic pain and the other is accute pain.
I hope your feeling a little better today.
