Default Anti acid medication, and Kidney problems.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what is being said about over the counter 24 hour anti Acids. I've been taking them for over five years.

Back in the 90's I took Imodium like it was going out of style for diarrhea. Now I don't have a bad case of diarrhea. Now I have heart burn. I've been taking these over the counter long lasting heart burn medications for over five years.

If I don't take anti acid medications, I get a horrible case of heart burn, but is my heart burn medication giving me Kidney disease possibly? Has this been sneaking up on me?

I don't know. BF

Dear BF,

Definitely tell your doctor that and about other over the counter medications.

With all the meds I take by script and OTC, I would be hard pressed to figure out which one was causing a side effect. I know you take a lot of meds, too.

But your nephrologist should have a really good grasp of meds that alone, or in combination, could effect kidney function. I would make a list of everything you can remember taking over the years.

Have you ever taken lithium?

I had to look that one up. I learn new words weekly. I haven't had anything like that. BF

Sometimes I take it for granted that I live right outside Boston where we have the best medical care in the country...

If you needed these antacids for so long, someone should have taken a look at your upper GI system to see what was going on
