I'm so sorry BF

Some patients requiring physical assistance, or step-down care, after acute hospitalizations go to rehab facilities before they go home. A hip replacement is the first thing that comes to my mind as an example, but there are plenty of other reasons.
But many recipients are much more physically healthy post-transplant than when they were before the surgery, and can be discharged home directly and pretty quickly, but everybody is different. I suppose they have to plan for the worst tho.
I think that there is concern that you may have problems understanding and adhering to the strict anti-rejection medication schedule on your own, and that's why they want you to have a caregiver- even if it is BS.

I would talk to your case manager to see if there are any programs that can offer you this kind of service when you leave the hospital... something that goes beyond regular visiting nurse services. There are a lot of great charitable organizations out there, so it couldn't hurt to ask

You are only setting out on this journey, BF. There is still time for the transplant team to get to know you, and hopefully realize that you are capable of handling the surgery and taking care of yourself post-op

I worked as a CNA on Med/Surg Hepatobiliary floor in a big hospital where we took care of all the liver disease and liver transplant patients (and others). We only got a couple kidney transplant patients when they didn't have enough beds on the nephrology floor. The few kidney transplant patients we got recovered much better/much more quickly.

I went to my nurse practitioner on Tuesday, and told her about the my kidney team, and how they rejected me from the kidney transplant list. She went into the records, and saw that they had some information that was incorrect about me. I have a form that I could rate them very poorly about their service. The hospital sent me this form. My NP said file it out, and report them. She said that the hospital needs to know this.

I told her about my specialist on kidneys doctor to. I wasn't very happy with him either. He did two things that I didn't appreciate, and the third strike I may send the form back to the hospital.

People have made so many mistakes with me about my mental health conditions throughout my life, and I don't plan on going through a bunch of mistakes with my physical conditions(Kidneys). I'm a nice guy, but I'm having a hard time with the (((accumulation))) of peoples mistakes about my mental health condition, and don't want to have it carry over into my physical condition. I'm glad that my NP is cool, and that she gets it, and understands it. She knows me now after many years. BF

Brokenfriend, good for you and your NP for keeping pressure on the medical team and paying attention to detail. They are not without fault although they can sometimes think they are. I have always said we have to be our own advocate when it comes to our health.....both mental and physical.

I learned real quick when I was diagnosed with MS in 2005 that I had to be the one to keep up with my health and not be afraid to speak up when I thought something was wrong or could be done in a better or different way.

You deserve a team of doctors that you can have confidence in....not have to constantly double check to make sure they're doing things correctly. Maybe if they know you have the option to rate their services to you, and the hospital will know that you're not satisfied with them, they will step up their game and treat you with the respect you deserve.

BF, I recently changed nephrologist's, and I'm extremely happy that I did. The first one didn't know his ***** from his elbow, but the new one is competent and now I feel like I'm in good hands.

Is your pdoc going to write a letter to your nephrologist and/or the transplant team to notify them that they have incorrect information?

, Yes I think you should take it further. IT is your life and your future. They should have all of your information correctly.

Brokenfriend, I was thinking about the aftercare situation. The hospitals here in GA have social workers that help facilitate care after you leave the hospital. Depending on what you need and what you're recovering from they can help you determine just what kind of facility or what kind of home care would be the best option.

When I was in the hospital a year ago once I was discharged I spent 28 days in a rehab to learn how to walk again. I still was very unsteady when my 28 days were up and I couldn't live by myself so my kids found an assisted living community and that is where I've been since August of last year. I've got to make other arrangements and get out of here because it is SO expensive. Insurance and Medicare does not pay for assisted living. Unless you have long term care insurance it's all your responsibility.

Maybe you could check with the hospital you're having your surgery in and see what their policy is for assisting patients with their care after being discharged. I cannot imagine a hospital not helping a patient with that.
