Hi Bizi,

Your story is very interesting to me. I have a 22 year old daughter with mood disorder NOS, and grew up with an alcoholic father. I am a naturally curious person, and have been touched by your, and others in this forum's, resilience. It gives me hope that my daughter, who is currently in college, may be able to launch and navigate in our complicated world.

Many good wishes to you!

Thank you @4-eyes

I am wondering if your daughter might want to join us here?
We could offer understanding, just another way to get support.
Does she take meds?
That is the number one thing I can suggest is for her to accept meds, a mood stabilizer like Lamictal is a great one that is the first line treatment.
Do you know what are her meds (if any)?

Bizi,

It would be great if my daughter would join, but she is still living in "denial land." In addition to the mood disorder she also has Asperger's and ADHD, so she is extremely complicated. She is still learning to accept herself and is not really comfortable in any type of forum setting.

My dd has been on Lamictal, and always in conjunction with an anti-depressant. She has tried Celexa, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Effexor and Prozac. UGH! She seems to do pretty well in the short term and then not so well. Two summers ago she did 42 sessions of TMS (trans-cranial magnetic stimulation), also with mixed results.

In December, after noticing more impulsive behaviors and not really seeing any mood improvements, as well as lots of weight gain (she also has binge eating disorder), we decided to go off the Prozac. She had been off the Lamictal since the TMS, on the advice of the psychiatrist. We did a wean and she's been off of Prozac completely since the end of January.

SO FAR SO GOOD!

My daughter has lost 30 pounds, and the impulsiveness has decreased some. Two months ago we decided to add in high dose hemp CBD, and that is helping. She does take stimulant meds for the ADHD as well. Last week she began a supplement, Accentrate, for the ADHD as well. It is considered a "medical food."

The true test of all of our work will come next month, when she begins her clinical training in microbiology. She is a senior, majoring in public health. She will be driving 60 miles to class 2-3 times a week and that will culminate in a full time practicum next spring. With all of her diagnoses, it will be extremely challenging. I am a hands on mom (and a licensed OT) and will be ready to provide a lot of support at first, and hopefully will be able to back off over time. She still has a LONG way before she will be independent. Her intelligence just doesn't mesh with her social maturity and executive functioning.

And that is the condensed version of our "novel." I hope everyone has a decent week!

C

Red face

@4-eyes
Thank you for sharing.

You are more than welcome to stay and continue to post here.
She sounds like a handful and is lucky to have a hands on mom who cares.
Are you working too, as an OT?
You have a lot on your plate.
She has much to accept and will with time I believe.

Was she suicidal? Is that why she had the stim?

No, I am not working. I have had myasthenia gravis since my daughter was a baby and eventually I was no longer to maintain my career. I am doing much better since finding a good treatment a couple of years ago, but I am now content to say I am "retired."

My mom passed in 2017, and my daughter's depression worsened at that time. She wasn't suicidal per se, but felt "like a hospice patient, waiting to die." She has been better since the TMS.

4-eyes,

I can totally relate. keep working through it all with her. It will be
worth it in the end. I have 3 kids with different disabilities.

And at different times in their phases of them.

If you need anything just ask.

I am grateful that your daughter is better after the treatments.
Sorry about your mom. that was a very hard year for you.
my MIL has MG and has had exacerbation's that are awful.
She is 86 and failing but refuses to leave the house and still drives a bit.
Her other son lives close to her and helps out a lot. They live in INdiana where we are from. Now we live in the south in cajun country. Louisiana.

Thank you for posting.

Lunch was amber jack fish and squash, rutabega, chard.
Work was light.
Had for dinner: hamburger, avocado, cheese and bacon.
and an arugula and brocoli salad with ceasar dressing.
After dinner I went to the gym tonight and walked 2.5 miles in 50 minutes and
used the hydro message bed as a reward for 10 minutes.
very happy about this.
eat less move more.
