Depression - that deep, dank hole of living death. It is a place where even on the brightest day, the sun cannot reach its depths. It is such misery that those who have never experienced it simply cannot understand. It is an ever-spiraling maze to be avoided at all costs, for once someone is lost in its twists and turns, the exit is oh, so elusive.

Thus we continue the topic of red flags, those early indicators of an impending mood swing. In this article, the second in a four-part series, we look at some of the common red flags of depression, because the earlier an episode is treated, the less its severity.

I have attempted to organize these symptoms into broad categories for easier reference. I have gathered this list of symptoms from personal experience as well as other resources.


Changes In Activity or Energy Level
Decreased Energy

Fatigue

Lethargy

Diminished Activity

Insomnia or Hypersomnia

Loss of Interest in Pleasurable Activities

Social Withdrawal

Physical Changes
Unexplained Aches and Pains

Weight Loss or Gain

Unexplained, Uncontrollable Crying

Feelings of Guilt

Feelings of Worthlessness

Loss of Self-Esteem

Despair

Hopelessness

Worry/Anxiety

Pessimism

Indifference

Self-Critical

Changes in Thought Patterns
Inability to Concentrate
