I read almost constantly! I hope to do some writing eventually. I highly recommend Diana Gabaldon's books: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and An Echo in the Bone. When I first got hooked, reading Outlander, my mind would linger with the characters even when I had to put the book down to get my work done. I would be sitting at my desk, on hold with some insurance company, thinking "I wonder if Claire will go back to her first husband or stay with her 23-year old Scottish Catholic virgin second husband? Who is Jamie, really?"

Much of the story takes place in Scotland beginning in 1743, right up through the American Revolution in the wild mountains of the colonies. There are also more modern bits, with a twist. There's a lot of medical information, both herbal and surgical. It's often shelved under Romance, but it's really more Historical Fiction.

Interesting though... I was just reading a news article a few days ago about James Patterson.
He's apparently giving grants to some book shops in the US and the UK to help them encourage reading in children as well as helping them keep their businesses running. It's a difficult time for book stores with all the online sites these days.

I'm not an avid book reader, but do pick up a book every so often when I have a chance. I'm a bit out of the book loop, but would can someone recommend a good mystery novel or even a mystery series?

The Alex Cross series by James Patterson. They are good I think. And there are many others. Also, John Grisham books. Women's Murder Club series by James Patterson. These are just off of the top of my head.

I just finished this book by Agnes Newton Keith and I can't stop thinking about it. It's a true story of being prisoners of war in a Japanese camp in Borneo. It's written in 1947 while she, her husband and their young son were held there and how they survived. Her words imho are timeless...."Why must all young men throughout this world make the choice, to either kill, or be killed?" And she knew there could be no good answer.
