So pleased they announced there will be a Season 5

There was so much to absorb in last night's 1 1/2 hr episode! Glad I recorded it so I can watch again.

Yes it was a complicated episode.... lots of various characters all conversing during the social times!

Seemed to me they wrapped up many of the social and downstairs threads at least to some extent. (just in case?).

The whole thing was rather upbeat for all concerned though.

I watched it this morning OnDemand. Hubby wanted to watch the last day of the Olympics last night.

Finished watching it this afternoon. I think I'm done watching it now. It was O.K. but I think there are other good Masterpiece Classics out there. Just me I guess.

Default Just wondering...

What are you all meaning by "masterpiece"?
Is that a particular channel you have there?
If it is I wonder if it is free to air, or pay tv?
mrsD mentions OnDemand. I gather that's a pay channel?

Lara, Downton evidently was funded for showing in US by PBS...
Public Broadcasting Service (aka educational television). This used to be a commercial free network, but now has short bites commercially at the beginning and end only. It is funded by the govt...a small bit actually...and by viewers who are well off--and various foundations. Sesame Street and the children's reading shows are on this network, as well as Nature and Nova, and Antique Roadshow.

Most of the quality Brit shows are on the Masterpiece classic time (like Downton and Upstairs/Downstairs) period or the Masterpiece Mystery time (like Sherlock and Poirot).
In our area this is Sunday nights mostly, with some repeats in the early morning hours sometimes, or during the weeks. Sometimes there are opera and orchestral shows, and in between may be repeats of Downton or others as fillers.
We now have THREE PBS cable channels, the other two are home improvement and cooking. I saw Simply Ming the other day! There is also an Italian cooking gal, "Lidia" I think her name is, who is really good to watch too. Does simple healthy wonderful food. (http://www.lidiasitaly.com/) Her show is fabulous IMO.

OnDemand is a part of our cable networks. Some shows are funded to be shown on this feature for a month or so after viewing on the network. This is paid for by commercials, as a rule now, as well. But Downton doesn't have any more than are there in the first place (this year it is Viking cruises, and Ralph Lauren )

When OnDemand started there were no commercials, but like everything else, it has them now. Our cable is pay for also...PAY FOR WITH BIG BUCKS in fact. But I like to watch the previous nights' shows OnDemand. If the shows on the networks are over stimulating (like Sherlock or some of the thriller type shows etc) I tend to like to watch them in daylight when I am rested. Otherwise I won't sleep well. LOL

PBS is also funded by viewers who are not well off. It's just not funded by the people who are well off. There is always a certain time of the year (seems more often now) when they ask for donations. As I said, donations are from anyone who chooses to give. Just clarifying that.

We get Lidia's Italy, Simply Ming and many other cooking shows as well as travel shows, garden shows, arts and crafts, etc. on Create TV. This is not a PBS channel for us. It is created and produced by American Public Televison (APT). It is nationwide.
