Ok, let's see if we can't drag this thread back on-topic... somewhat/sort of...

OMG: Pen, Paper May Be Better for Long-Term Comprehension

I'm not quite as computer literate as some; can you take notes on e-readers/kindles? I'm pretty sure you can on tablets, and I know there are apps that allow you to take notes longhand with a stylus that are instantly transcribed into digital text, and apps like Dragon that will transcribe verbal notes into digital text; but I'm not sure if you can attach them to a book being read that way (or maybe that's future functionality?)

I can also envision (if they aren't already doing it) interactive... (books isn't the right word because they would be more than that) on e-readers/tablets. Something less than a Trekian holodeck (they're a long way off due to memory/processing requirements) but nevertheless multi-media involving words (written and/or spoken), video, music, and more. Something books might evolve into.

Would it be too far off-topic to expand/modify the original questionWhich do you prefer—E-Reader or Paper Books—to include audio books? (Same problem with note-taking.)

Sounds like a plan. I read that article you posted. Interesting.

"off-topic" / "tangents"

eh, life is like that.

I removed my 2 messages although I really didn't need to do that.
Sometimes conversations go in tangents.
Saying "hi" to someone after not seeing them so long isn't really that "off topic".
The other msg was a tangent.
It's what conversations are all about.
Sorry I have a sense of humour.
I'll take it elsewhere.

Hi, Not to butt in on the discussion, but wanted to add from another perspective.
I've been unable to read books now for almost 9 months. I've only just learned that the backlit ebooks are in fact easier for me to read, so far.

E-books to me, like available technology(computers, etc.), are a tool. Sometimes the only choice we are given is choice of attitude.

My power wheelchair gives me mobility and freedom. My computer and e-mails gives me access to others and entertainment. Years ago it was very different. My kids are in college, I don't think pencils and pens and paper get used much. Both rent many needed textbooks at a much lower cost on e-books. I've read a hundred "classic" books they've never heard of. To them I am a dinosaur, much like I thought my parents were.

Well, I have found a great new way to use my Kindle Fire to bring absolute joy to another human being. My landlord (also my friend) is 81 years young. She has a Jitterbug phone, she watches tv but of course (well, not of course) but you know what I mean, she knows nothing about tablets, computers, etc.

Last night I was downstairs and I said "Would you like to really laugh?" She said: "Now what are you going to show me on that thing of your"? Usually I show her Facebook stuff about her grandson.

Well, last night I had her watching Ellen Degeneres videos of Andy and Amy at the haunted house. And if any of you haven't seen any of these videos, bring tissues because you will be laughing so hard you have no idea.

Well, last night there was my landlord holding my Kindle Fire watching Ellen Videos and laughing her you know what off. She was wiping her eyes and having the time of her life.

So everytime I go downstairs in the evening I shall make notice of a very funny video for her and she will be laughing her head off. At 81, everybody should be laughing their heads off

Yes they should, and the older they get beyond that, the longer and louder!

I wasn't current/hip about J-bug phones (though I suggested something like that years ago—I am genetically cursed with sausages where other people have fingers ) so thanks for the 411. I think I like the ones with the round buttons/keys vs. the newer chicklet type in the curved rectangle. The larger the keys, the better!
