Hello, this is my first post here. My husband suffered a serious frontal lobe injury 9 months ago. The reality of what this means for me is setting in and I am really looking for some positive stories of couples who have been able to get through this with a strong marriage. Most of what I read is negative and it is really not what I need right now. Thank you

Hello Tomsox,
I can't speak directly to your situation but I wanted to say hi and welcome. I am sorry that your family is going through this. Many medical events are a loss but I am sure that your husband's brings unique challenges. I hope that you are able to get the support you need, both here and in your community. A therapist who deals with illness and loss might be of help in transitioning through the changes. Things like this absolutely effect a marriage but it is amazing what two people who genuinely love one another can adapt to. Best to you and your husband. I am sending thoughts of healing and comfort and hope that he makes improvement over time. Be kind to yourself and to him. It is a tender time during the adjustment but you will come through it.

I joined the ABI carers group unwillingly 18 months ago. The first thing Id say is that 9 months is not a long time, and that you are still in the early stages, there is much improvement still to come. I ignored all the advice about getting help, joining groups, having respite until I nearly burnt out. You are still in the grieving stages, youll go back, go forward, have good days and bad days. Yes there are many positive marriages stories out there. I think ours are much more challenging and to survive we must be "selfish" and treat ourselves kindly and at times indulgently. Say yes to everyone who offers, break free from the ones who promise much and deliver nothing and learn as much as you can about the situation you face. Lots of us care that youre doing it tough. Hang in there, it will get better.
