My story is quite long. My 7 yr old son was diagosed with Childhood Rolandic Epilepsy 3 years ago. To make a long story short he was on meds for the past 3 years and now is seizure free and off his meds!!!! Now my 4 yr old son has decided that he needed to try this! He had 2 febrile seizures and now has had 2 unexplained seizures. With the history of the oldest child, we all (including our pedi neurologist) really though the youngest would have the same thing. Except, his EEG is normal and his MRI is normal. After our MRI, we have learned that he has a completely opacified left maxillary sinus. I have 2 questions. 1. Can you have a normal EEG and normal MRI and still have epilespy? 2. Can the sinus issues cause the seizures?

With our first son, his seizures were either while going to sleep or waking up. The 2 the baby has had have been out of the blue.

We have no other family history of seizures. But, both of my children were born with their cords wrapped around their necks. I thought the second time around would be easier. If anyone has any idea what could be going on, I would greatly appreciate it. Right now he is taking Keppra and waiting to talk to the pediatrician about this sinus issue.

I am very sorry you are going through this times 2! Yes, you can have a normal MRI plus normal EEG and still have epilepsy. My son has had 3 normal MRI and has epilepsy. most of his EEGs are normal as well. The difference would be if he has a seizure during the EEG. EEGs are just a small window in time and do not often capture a seizure. They are the "interictal" or in between time, in between seizure and often can be normal. 30-40% of people, especially with partial seizures can have normal EEGs.

I also have seizures after hears of a misdiagnoses of sinus disease. I even had 2 sinus surgery. Now I do not have a calcified section so do not know if it is related, though both my son and I will have seizures when we have an infection. They will lower our seizure threshold. I have severe migraines that can mimic sinus infections as well that complicated getting the diagnosis.
