Hi everyone! My daugther is 7 and since birth she has had issues with consipation. She now has to take miralax everyday to help. The doctor says to stay on it for six months and then try to take her off it and see what happens. Then she always goes back to the constipation and gets stomach aches. Has any one else's child had these problems. Just wondering if any body knows any thing that might help. I can't get her to eat prunes, and had to stop her from eating cheese. Please if any body has any ideas please respond.

Hi ,
My 9 yr old has been suffering from this for the last few years. Being a special needs child she has alot of anxiety issues, afraid it will hurt to poop then she holds it.. it is a vicious cycle. What i find helps her a bit is Lansoyl, its a red jelly type in a jar.. she loves the taste. I'm in Canada so i'm not sure if its available where you are. I've also used senekot when it gets really bad but she has to stay home from school for at least a couple days until it gets into her system and she is able to go to the bathroom..she won't empty her bowels the first day but she does have some "leakage". Good luck, sorry i couldn't help you more. |

My DD had these problems so this may be a bit long! If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them or clarify something. Because I went through all of this, I would love to be able to help someone else. And some of it probably doesn't pertain to your DD but I'll tell you anyway.
My DD first started complaining of stomach aches and had constipation when she was 6. We tried Miralax but we found out she's allergic to glycol when she got a rash. We took away "milk" and that helped. Then when she was 10 she started to complain again. We ended up taking her to a pediatric gastrointestinal doctor because her regular doctor was working with us but we weren't getting anywhere. We took her off all milk products - including all foods with milk in the ingredients. We took away apples. We gave her peaches and baby spinach salads every day. After a while her constipation improved with her change in diet. The stomach pain was still there though and it was a separate issue. She had acid reflux as well so eventually we found a medicine without glycol and she started taking it. We also took away all products with glycol in it (shampoo, lotions) around the same time. Within two weeks her stomach aches were gone. Since December she has been off the Nexium, eating products with milk including ice cream (she'll take a lactaid), and doesn't need to eat raw baby spinach every day. So far so good. We also took her to an allergist to be sure she wasn't allergic to any foods just in case that was the reason for the pain. It was a long tiring process to figure everything out and there were just some days we both just wanted to scream. The worst part was when others, including family members, said she was either faking her stomach aches or exaggerating. She tried to explain she'd been living with this pain since she could remember and so it didn't make her cry unless it was really bad. I had to fight for the doctors to listen to her and to believe what she was saying. I remember last year when she started to feel better she told me she had never known what it felt like to be full or hungry because every day she had pain in her stomach. She never said anything because she thought it was normal! I cried when she said that because it was just so sad. I wish you the best in finding answer to help your DD. |

I definitely think this could be an allergen or intolerance problem. Also, we had a friend whose daughter had a problem digesting certain enzymes. She ended up having to go on a stomach feeding process. No fun, but better than the alternative.
