Thought it might be time for an up-date on my withdrawal plan. I am now in the 10th week and have reduced that “dread drug” from 225mg down to a total of 100mg daily (25mg @ 6am/50mg @2pm/25 mg@ 10pm). I took my last 50mg capsule yesterday and now taking that “dread drug” dissolved in water only. Let me explain the “dissolved in water” that I am doing.

I asked my PM Doc, who I greatly respect, about how to split the 75mg capsules that I had down to 25mg with out another prescription. I was going to open them and try to measure the powder and place the contents back into a gelatin capsule. He said it would not for various reasons. His suggestion was to open it into a measured amount of water and then store in the refrigerator. Here’s what I’m doing to split my 75mg capsules into three liquid 25mgs. In one cup of water, I cut the capsule (it is water-soluble.). 1/3rd cup gives me my needed 25mg and so on. Seems to be working plus it’s saving me prescription money. Any thoughts on my “dissolved in water” practice?

Today is the beginning of my 10th week. Headaches are the still main side effect that just seems to persist and really affect my quality of life. I still have headaches almost continuously, but they may not be quite as severe. The neuropathic foot pain is cranking up some, but I’m hoping I can tolerate the PN pain as the head clears up. I am still not where I want to be with the side effects. I know I must put on my Winston Churchill hat and remember his “we shall fight them on the beaches” speech and carry on for weeks yet.

I’m closer to ending that “dread drug” from my life.

Lyrica 600 mg a day

Just found this site. I have been on Lyrica 600 mg a day and hydrocodone lots for a work related back injury that forced me to retire. I knew this day was coming when the insurance company would start denying the meds. I tapered down and haven't used any hydrocodone in 4 days. That withdrawl has been bad enough and is still not over. I know have to figure out how Im going to get off the Lyrica. My new fear is what to replace it with since the Lyrica did help a lot in the burning of my feet. I also have a stimulator in my back but that dosent really cover the burning and pain in my feet and legs. The Lyrica withdrawl scares me though as I once tried tapering off and had severe problems including chest pains and breathing problems.

Speak to your doctor

Hi Joe, please do go easy titrating down with your lyrica. It states on the paperwork that accompanies the drug to not let yourself be in a position where you fall short and run out. The effects on your body as it adapts to no longer having it can be extreme as you have already experienced. While you still have insurance for it, perhaps you could begin to set aside an amount so that you can titrate down at your own speed. When I was on it, I had mine prescribed in 75mg so even though I was on 300 daily once I decided I would not renew my next script I was able to every other day miss 75mg and I was fortunate to be able to get off it quickly even though it was hell, anyhow that way I felt comfortable with my reduction plan. You may find you get down to 75 and plateau there for a bit or even have to hope up again a little. It's a tough medication to withdraw from as there is no support for it as it is not a "narcotic". Whatever you do, please do it in conjunction with your GP support.

:Soapbox:
This is nearly always my concern for people who discontinue pain medications of any kind (narcotic/opioid or otherwise) for any reason; what if the pain is still there—or returns—and how are they going to deal with it? :Ponder: Doctors' responses are often the same as they are for patients who are concerned about issues of side effects and/or dependence & tolerance to begin with—"Don't worry about it. We'll deal with that if/when it happens." Unfortunately, it nearly always does happen, and when (not "if") it does, those doctors are not the ones having to deal/suffer with it.

Joe, have you tried gabapentin, topiramate (both now generic), or any other meds in that class (anticonvulsants) that are similarly being used off-label for neuropathic pain?

The antioxidant supplement R-Lipoic Acid has been found to help alleviate this type of pain in some people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Though I am not diabetic, this supplement eliminates the burning pain in my feet entirely.

More supplements & medications that might help can be found in the Peripheral Neuropathy forum:

Hi All - new here

Hi All,

I discovered this helpful forum after the infamous google words "lyrica suicide". I'll keep my story short, but yes I am also tapering off Lyrica.

I was on 150mg/150mg morn/eve, Thank goodness I am nearly at half at 75/~90 now. I have been reducing with the help of an ear acupuncturist. Ear acupuncture has known benefits in detox for drug users (legal or illiegal).

I do believe however, I am taking it a bit fast, as with every drop I experience my mood dropping and anxiety as well. So its drop med, week or two bad, feel better again, drop med, feel bad all over again. So I'll be going 1/2 the speed from now on.

I really believe that the ear acupuncture has helped a lot, since I started the detox my really dark suicidal thoughts have gone. But it definitely doesn't take away all of the withdrawal.

Lyrica is an awful drug - you take it it causes depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and for some even behavior. You start getting off it, you get slapped with bad lows and anxiety. Catch 22. But I need to go slower.

Anyone with some tips & tricks in helping getting off? Somewhere in the thread, warm water enemas were mentioned and also GABA supplements.

Good luck to us all! Eventually we will be free from this drug.

how long does lyrica insomnia withdrawal last?

i have been taking (only) 1 x 150 mg of lyrica for the past 4 years at night - before i went to sleep, but I noticed it stopped helping me sleep, and i woke up with a headache each morning - so I quit taking it.

I am on my 2nd week since I stopped taking the drug.

I go to sleep easily, but wake up within an hour or 2 and then can not go back to sleep ...

i looked into lyrica withdrawal symtoms and see that insomnia is one of them.

But how long will this last? Will I ever be able to sleep through the night again?

thanks for your input.

May I ask..how long did you take Lyrica? I am trying to wean off of it.

sleeplessindubai 08-24-2014 11:29 PM

free at last

I took lyrica for about 4 1/2 years .. only at night to help sleep.
i tried several times to get off it, and after my last post, i went cold turkey ... went through a horrible 4-6 weeks, but finally feel like its out of my system.

i feel much much better and consistently feel good throughout the day; and I am sleeping well again. the best i have slept since i can remember.

the point of sharing all this with you -- is try and fight the best you can and get off it. think about how you will feel 3 months from now. its well worth the hell you might go through, to finally be free from it.

4 1/2 years I was on that **** ... I was addicted without even knowing i was addicted.

good luck

I was just recently taken off Lyrica after 3 years because of the side effects I was having. Yes, it helped the chronic nerve pain i'm suffering from after a double fusion thanks to a drunk driver, however the side effects changed my whole personality. I went from being functional, happy and physically fit to non functional, severely depressed, suicidal thoughts, major weight gain, rages, and blurry vision. I was taking 300mg a day, started in Dec 2009 and barely left my bedroom after that. I kept it dark and slept almost every day. I was dying inside. So now, since my doctor did not taper me off the drug, I am having major withdrawals. Panic attacks, vomiting, severe pain, crying over nothing, legs feel like I am walking with concrete boots, insomnia and burning. The good news is the depression seems to be lifting (no suicidal thoughts), my eye sight is back, and I've dropped 6lbs in a week. I feel like i've lost 3 years of my life because I did not know what was wrong with me. I will definitely be more resourceful next time before I just trust a dr and let them put me on a medication. I told all of my drs about the depression and suicidal thoughts and not one of them attributed it to the lyrica. I felt great for awhile, I think it took 6 mo to start the downward descend. My new dr thinks it could take up to 3 mo for the withdrawals to stop because it is such a powerful drug. My prayers go out to you if you are struggling with this.

I'm going through the exact same nightmare that you described and I'm 10 weeks off Lyrica. I'm having terrible anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia. I feel nothing like myself.... Like I'm going crazy, literally!
I'm am getting really discouraged feeling like this nightmare will never end. I read your post and was hoping you could plz tell me in retrospect how long it took you to feel like "yourself" again? =(
Thanks in advance.
