I have been approved to begin epidural injections at the C6 C7 due to 3.8 mm disc protrusion. Does anyone know if these are generally safe and if anyone regrets doing these as I am afraid to do them. Thanks for any help.

First I wanted to say welcome! I have had them in the Lumbar part of the back. They worked great for me...very little pain...however the pain relief was great! I used them until I could have surgery and it was worth it!

I do know that some people don't get much or any relief from them though. I don't know if it has to do with the person doing them or what....good luck!!

Hi Mike ~ There's a lot of controversy about these. For me, I got NO relief from them at all. I've been to 3 different pain docs and ALL of them INSISTED that I try the steroid shots and I had the same results from all 3. No relief.

They usually want you to try a series of these. If you don't get relief from the first one, don't let them tell you that you have to build them up in your system. You should get relief the VERY FIRST TIME IF you're going to get relief at all!!

Also, there has been talk that these epidurals can cause arachnoiditis, since anything that enters the epidural space can cause it. Arachnoiditis is an incurable inflammation of the arachnoid space. It is extremely painful. How true it is, I don't know. All I know is I sure wouldn't want it!

I have had 2 series of epidural injections in my lumbar area. I had a bulging disc. The injections worked great. They didn't hurt that much. Good luck. Be sure to have a reputable physicist do the injections.

Hi, I am new to the site. I had two epidurals last month for the first time. Kanalog 80 mgs was used. I had no side effects at all. I did get some pain relief. It was not a hard proceedure to go through eithor. I was terrified for nothing. Many sites said this med. wasn't good, but I found out that for myself it was a good idea. There is some pain relief. Good luck

I had one epidural injection in my lumbar region over 2 years ago. I think the doctor punctured the nerve. I got a big increase in pain. I am now taking 300mg a day of Lyrica to control the pain. I was never on any medication before. I never should have gotten the injection. I went from a little numbness in one leg to pain in both.

I just had the 3rd block on Wednesday. I find the lumbar block to have a few side effects for me, like I feel tired and don't move very well the day that I have the shot. The last time I had it I felt really horrible for 2 weeks, but the doctor said it was because he hit the nerve wrong. This time it is kind of painful in the hips still, but it was given in the siatic nerve and hopefully in 2 weeks the pain will go down as far as it did the last time. Except this lat time I had a flat tire the day after and I am still feeling the back, back talking about why I should of not bent the way I did.

I am new to this site and suspect that it is safe to assume that my question has probably already been answered somewhere in this forum, but having yet to find such same question and answer, would someone please be so kind as to advise me of the duration of time that an epidural provides relief of pain. In regards to my own situation, my interest would relate to my condition of lumbar spinal stenosis. Thanks very much.

islearom, two years ago I had my 5th lumbar surgery. I had stenosis and an whole bunch of other stuff...before the surgery I used epidural injections for relief of the major pain I was suffering. I waited to have my surgery for a few months but found out that my pain was getting worse each day. The doc did the injections and I felt relief right away.

As for how long they last...I really think its different for everyone. Mine would last for about six weeks or more. I do know this, I wouldn't have been able to wait as long as I did without the injections.

I did have an injection nine years ago by a different doc and really hurt and I felt no pain relief. I think you need to pick a doc that does them on a regular basis...Hope I have helped you...pm me anytime...take care!!
