Hi!
You are not alone, and your condition from PTSD and all your suffering from it is related and treatable. There is a bit of direction change you need to do from focusing on the Physical damage repair. You have been fighting this for many years with from what you are saying with little relief. First Stress/Anxiety has a one to one relationship with your pain intensity. The more Anxiety, the more it is going to hurt. Second Anxiety causes the body to go into a inflammation response, causing more nerve compression, pain signal, and on and on and on and on.. Most everyone has DDD after the age of 30, it is normal, there is a chance that there is nerve root irritation from it. It happens, the more muscle spasms and lack of movement in say your neck can make this seem worse. It is all related. PTSD ties into this in theory by a rapid rewiring of the brain to be more sensitive to pain and of course the heightened anxiety exacerbated it. People with long term Chronic Pain also may get panic disorders like Agoraphobia, Social Phobia, etc.. from the Isolation and not going out and having fun. It falls under the chronic pain sufferer thinking they are "Sick" and nobody understands as it is a invisible condition. That and it hurts to move so I don't. Typical medications like Opiates (vicodin/percocet/oxycodone/hydrocodone), Benzodiazepines (atavan/zanex/sleeping pills), marajuana, morphine, and other narcotics work well for acute pain, but cause the brain to re-wire with from addition neuro-chemicals flooding into the brain, and cause the symptoms they are being taken for as the normal brain reaction for the brain saying, hey give me more aka. The Withdrawal is original pain/condition and over time will be worse than the original pain. FYI: don't turn these down for conditions after surgery/damage, by keeping you out of pain while your body is still healing (First 3 Months) being calm (Lower anxiety) will keep the inflammation response down, and make that go much quicker, and less secondary problems, including nerve cells learning that the pain signals are normal and increase the possibility of chronic pain issues many years down the road. I've been told that children with a Traumatic experience as a child has a much higher chance to have a chronic pain condition as a adult. So short term if you have not already: a psychiatrist that specializes in CBT for Panic Disorders/Chronic Pain. If you are on any narcotics, look into anti-convulsants and Tricyclic (SSRI) as they block the receptors vs flood the brain with chemicals) there is withdrawal but not in the form of your brain telling you it hurts more give me more! They also help with anxiety. Aqua Aerobics, Water Walking, Yoga, Tai Chi, walking will help you on a daily basis to calm down the suffering. Mindfulness Meditation or bio-feedback is also crutial DAILY just 10-15 minutes a day. These are not instant 1 hour fixes, these take months.. none of these can hurt you, so even if they do not work, they are still good for you. I am a devout follower of the Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program at the Cleveland Clinic, who specializes in exactly your condition, and has had a very high percentage of success.. The American Chronic Pain Association (theacpa.org) that provides local group meetings around the world and Chronic pain support, is based from several patients from this program in the 80's. There is also a Doctor that has a clinic that follows this plan in Indiana I think, he was so moved by the program he went back to school got a degree, and opened a clinic. I can't find his name though, but the people at ACPA and CPRP know of it. Also there are programs/clinics popping up around the country I hear following this type of treatment but abridged and less experience, as the international conference on pain is pushing to move from a Anesthesiologist based pain clinics to a more overall discipline based approach usually run by psychiatrists. Also because The Cleveland Clinics program has dealt with complex chronic conditions for over 25 years under the same head, they are pretty amazing on diagnostic, though they will tell you, you are there to learn to deal with getting back control of your life living with a chronic pain condition. Basically you are in 8 hours a day care for 5 days a week. Diagnostic tests called for by the program get done as if you were in ICU. Monitoring of Medications and reaction are done hourly by the top experts on those medications. No more specialist run-around, they take ownership of 100% of your issues top to bottom, and make sure it is being taken care of on the Campus of one of the Top 5 Hospitals in the world. Including life long support afterwards, Chronic pain people have complex issues that typically could use the input on almost all seemingly unrelated issues in the future. There are monthly free meetings that people drive in from Indiana monthly, as well as some fly in from around the world occasionally. http://my.clevelandclinic.org/chronic_pain/default.aspx Dr. Covington http://my.clevelandclinic.org/staff_...?doctorid=1053 They will determine and get insurance approval. Medicare/cade approved. People from out of town typically get a hotel room, or cheaper rent a furnished apartment for a month. Whether or not you think I am crazy this gives you and anyone reading this lots of leads to research yourself on these treatments and how and why chronic pain may work. Everyone is different, but once you sit in a group of people that have had these kinda treatments, you find that you are not by far alone. I hope I've given you some useful information to dig into! Chronic pain sufferers are chronic procrastinators, we all have a mile long story, we all have the stories of hell dealing with doctors, we all feel like nobody understands. People who have found relief from chronic pain rarely come to forums and comment on their success.. I look forward to hearing about your success Rob. Quote:
