Are doctors taught how to be evasive and not listen? Or do they just not generally care??? I took my research into a different physician today that the good people of this website help me discover, and I got another brush off. Ok. The best part of this was this morning, when I called to make the appt. I must have one heck of a reputation at this hospital bc I told the lady I wanted to come in for a second opinion. JUST a second opinion. These people had the nerve to call me back about 20 minutes later to tell me that while the doctor would see me, he was in NO WAY going to prescribe me anything for pain relief. I laughed. Hard. And it really felt good. The nerve of some people. I have been in sooooo much pain for 2 days I would have gone to the emergency room if I thought I would get anyone to actually treat me. But being that I live in a small town where everyone knows eachother, I didn't even bother. I just cried and prayed for relief. And now I'm probably going to get in trouble Friday when I see my regular physician for what he will see, as me trying to seek relief from one of his buddies. Lord give me strength. Because right now I'm running on rage and hate.

I'm sorry you got brushed off for asking about the possibility of your research. I've been brushed off (as I'm sure many others have) but I usually follow it up with a sincere why/why not question. I'm also curious and involved enough with my doctors that when they do give me a dx/swag, I ask why they think what they do or how they arrived at the dx. I think it sometimes (not always) comes down to attitude and rapport (not suggesting anything personal -- I'm just rambling in general terms here). IME, doctors don't mind questions, but they get defensive with challenges. As far as listening, my rheumatologist once commented, and later another specialist said the same thing.... (maybe they read the same article? ) Doctors only hear 25% of what patients tell them (usually because they're going through possibilities in their minds). Patients only hear 50% of what doctors tell them (usually because they're sick/upset/have no clue what the doctor's saying). OTOH, sometimes they're really not listening and/or brushing us off. Here's an article about a book on this subject written by a couple of doctors. (I haven't read the book.) There are some tips at the bottom. When doctors don’t listen and how to get them to Doc

I've been dealing with this problem for years! Although I'm new here I am not new to pain. Since I'm only 32 and 165lbs doctors refuse to listen to me too, so I hear you. Somedays I can get out of bed, somedays I can't.
It's taken me 5 years including 2 MRIs and a CT to get to the doorstep of surgery. Still, no doc will prescribe pain meds. End of story. It's so enraging to be shrugged off, and so humiliating that I've actually had to stop seeing doctors for pain entirely. Injections and treatment only. Obviosuly post-surgery I would get something, but day to day Tram is all I can get. Pain management has had to become handled privately, and to great expense financially. |
