Dorrie,

If you can get the photo to me in PM, I'll work it for you.

I'll go in and crop it for a closer pic for avatar as well.

Let me know.

hi Dorrie,

even the photo is very small, we can still see how CUTE she is...*biggrin...

now, if I may suggest the following steps. But before I even type them out, I'd like to do something that I'd call, "it looks harder than it does" talk...LOL

Whenever someone types out instructions via the internet (or even the instructions that come with devices such as cell phones and TV's, etc) the other person may feel overwhelmed and NOT want to try it because it looks "hard"

often times, it is the person that is writing the instructions fault for making it too "jargonesque" but sometimes, those jargons are needed because that is the universal language when one has to do tech stuff. With that said, what you want to do is actually very simple and I hope I can break it down easy enough for you and add little side notes to help you understand.

The side notes are not a necessary read but if you'd like to learn about them, I think they would help you in the future. But I'll keep what you will need to do linear thus you can just do it 1,2,3 and not worry about all the details.

OK, I'll do that on the next post. LOL

Default Steps

step 1: get an account at a photo uploading site to upload photos. The most popular/free/easiest one is called "photobuckets" their website is below:

http://photobucket.com/register.php?link=topmenu

the above link will take you to the registered page.

just pick a user name, choose your password and click on next and follow the steps.

important thing at this stage is to write down your user name and password somewhere so you won't forget it.

*sidenote

photos and videos are memory hogs not only on your computer but also takes up a lot of bandwidth at forums such as this one. I think Doc has the photos in a limited size which is probably smaller than most would like to post. But he probably has to do it due to memory and/or bandwidth issues(this is where it gets costly for anyone that runs websites/servers and such)

so, photo hostings sites are created for that reason. They take photos that you have from your desktop, let you upload it, then let you share it anywhere you'd like by simply linking it to forums or blog or even ebay.

most of them, such as photobucket, know the limits that most websites prefer and will automatically shrink it down to the popular size/format so that you can link it without using too much bandwidth for either parties.

They may limit the amount and size of your photos per month. But unless you are going to post thousands of photos, you should be fine.

most people that upload their photos through their cameras will probably hit over 1 MB of memory, that is a lot to be sharing over the internet for it will slow everybody down. So what's good about these photo places are that they will shrink it down automatically for you.

Questions you may have are probably:

Q: uploading photos from my desktop? how do they do that, is it safe?

A: uploading photos from your desktop is done through a type of protocol (it used to be called FTP but there are more advanced stuff now) and you are simply sharing a "language" through binary codes with the hosting site. It is a bit more complicated that what I described but also that easy in a sense.
Nothing is ever "safe" but it is pretty safe since photobucket is a very reputable site

step 2: uploading your photos

now that you have an account with photobucket, it is time for you to upload your photos.

To start off, please make sure you know where you've saved your photos to.

By default, Windows system usually save them to your documents. And within your documents, it will usually by default save it to a subfolder called "My Pictures"

So, now you have logged into photobucket, you should see the uploading page now. Toward the top middle sections, there should be empty space/rectangle bars followed by the word "browse"

to upload, you click on "browse" and it will open a path (opening your computer) and then you can follow the path to find the photo(s) you want to upload. They often will default to your " My Pictures " file. Find the photo that you want to use.

(if you don't see photos and they are listed as tiles or icons, just pick a blank space, right click, select "view" and select "thumbnails" and it should display all your photos as images)

once you've selected the photo, you can double click it or click on "open" and the file should now be named in the empty space before the word "browse"

at this point, you can add a title to help you remember it or just leave it as it is.

go toward the bottom and click on "UPLOAD"

depending on the size of your photo, the speed of your internet, how busy both servers are, the photos should be uploaded soon. When it is done, you should see your photo(s) by scrolling down to the page.

*sidenote

I think one of the hardest things when people save photos to their computers is to find it again. They often follow the protocol but may sometimes accidentally click on something else and won't be able to find anything again.

I find it the simplest to create a folder on my desktop, naming it "photos" and save everything there. Even if the photos have been downloaded else where, as soon as I find them, I would drag them to my desktop in the photos folder. I would then create mini/sub folders to group them.

the other hard thing is that a lot of the times, windows would show these folders as either tiles/icons or something else instead of the actual photos.

but a lot of the times, the photos are named weird, something like "DSC102"

and while you know that is a photo, you wouldn't know if it was a photo of your grand children or a photo of a nekkid pole dancing moderator.

I usually would rename them by left click then right click right over the "DSC102" and scroll down to rename.

this way, you can name it just how you like it and can recognize it.

when you are in the folder and all you can see are icons or whatever other than images. You can simply pick an empty spot, right click and select view, then thumbnails, and it should show anything that are photos to...photos!
(JPG by default)
