This is soooo much fun being a part of naming the new "building" where there are no strangers, no bars on the windows and everyone knows your name.
We know the MODS names too. No one is hiding behind the drapes. ....YIPPEE!~! WhaHoo! Yes, DocJohn...you rock.:p |
pretty cool huh? :D
maybe we should have voted on "Cheers". :p |
Oh No! I should have read this thread before voting. One name I voted for was brainmatters and now after hearing about BM and brains oozing out, I want to change my vote.
Sure glad that I had another vote Anne |
8:00PM, CST, BM and Neruo Talk are neck and neck....GOOOOOOOOOO NT!~! Gotta run, Dr. McDreamy is on.....
|
When will the poll close and the chosen name announced?:D
|
I vote for Brain waves or brain matters. I think it needs to have 'brain' in the title for all the different search engines can find us
|
I'm okay with how the "polling" turns out :).
I am wondering though why it would be important for search engines to pick up the term "brain." :o I guess I'm still thinking in respect to the forums also broaching mind/body - neuro., ortho., etc. I think I no longer focus on its name. Meta tags that engines will pick up will still do so, and I guess I think it more important that descriptors within the tags be accurate. I hadn't thought about it until after someone else pointed it out, yet the BM name ... carries such an unpleasant vibe. After all, in full, the name really does denote as has been pointed out :(. |
Well, I like neurotalk the best, I'm glad it's still in the lead. Of course, my other two votes, healthtalkcentral and neurofamilysupport are way behind. I did NOT vote for brainmatters, after reading all the comments here I'm glad I didn't! I deal with enough BM every day!! :D
Hugs, |
Ummm... I am not sure that the initials BM  or BS  are reason enough to not vote for the names Brain Matters or Brain Storm if you like them. If one of them is chosen, we could always add the word "forum" or "community" on the end so the initials would be:
BMF for Brain Matters Forum BMC for Brain Matters Community BSF for Brain Storm Forum BSC for Brain Storm Community :D |
It's not just the initials that inspired how I voted; it's also knowing that this is accurate:
http://forums.braintalk2.org/showpos...5&postcount=32 To open a forum that carried the connotation every time I saw its name... Well, it's a preference not to have the thought conjured, is all. |
What's a little blood and gore among friends? ;)

Chimera and others, if there's one thing that can be said of us: We're not apathetic.
Here's a li'l something for you and others... and I assure, it's good :): |
Love it! Thanks! :) :) :)

Wow, I never gave much thought to the negative side of any of those names or how the initials could be perceived, but now that it has been brought up, I think any of the names that can "refer" to something we all assoicate with being either a painful reminder of something or the intials conjur up a different meaning in themselves, than perhaps maybe one or more of the selections should be reconsidered and not be accepted.
How's that for rambling on that BM or even BMF can not be thought of in the best of terms. :p Jyes |
Jyes, I do share your and others feelings on this. If the name of our community is going to bring a bad memory or reaction for anyone, then I too feel we need to consider really carefully before adopting it. I know we arent going to be able to make everyone happy with the name...but there is a difference between personal preference and distressing perception I think
|
True story here...my sisters maiden initials were BO...her first marriage..initials were BS..her third and final marriage her initials were BM.
She has a wonderful sense of humor....you have to! :D |
Paranoid
Probably paranoia at work, but is anyone tracking membership numbers/new members while the polling is going on (I stepped in too late to do it myself)? The paranoid part is, is it possible to vote twice (or more) with multiple user names?
|
Brainiacs Talk
At this moment, Brain Matters leads Neuro Talk by one vote. I suggest a compromise, "Brainiacs Talk", combining parts of both names. :D
|
If it is too close, maybe we should consider this a primary election, and have a second vote with just the top two contenders. That...or a recount :D.
I'm not really so worried about double voters. I did joke last night at the dinner table that I should have other family members and friends register here to cast a tie breaker vote...lol. I am not losing any sleep over this (and I hope nobody else is either) ~ but I am keeping watch:). Talk about a close race~ Cara |
The final decision and the law of averages

Which makes it a a moot point as to whether we having people registering again to get an extra vote, for one would have to presume that the 2nd time voters would have a similar ratio among the most popular names. Theresa |

A run-off might be a good idea. Could lock the membership during the run-off.

too bad BHC ( like Brain Health Central ) wasn't there. then i could confuse hubby constanly since the health club we own is BHC. he would never know what the heck i'm talking about. :p
psst...i'm like you lara...haven't voted yet...go with the flow. but kinda hope the flow isn't bm  ;) |

I get it ;). Took me just a little bit...lol.

And they didn't have my BraintoBodyTalk on the list either. |
I don't know about you all, but the suspense is killing me! Well, whatever it's called, it's still home!

this is my opinion on a few things that have been brought up.
1) When we all came here, if the forum was named "Charlesmansonsucks", would anyone that is here now NOT have came here if the name offended someone because of the name? (before anyone argues that Doc John would have better taste to come up with "Charlesmansonsucks" for a name, bare in mind I am simply making a point)? probably NOT. Because most of us were OBT timers and we needed a place to go when it crashed. If this place was named "DocJohn'spupuplater" and the pupu offended some, they would've probably came here anyways... 2) I think that no matter what name is chosen, it wouldn't and shouldn't affect anyone that much due to internet user prefrerences. Meaning that for most of us, as soon as we've typed in the URL, we would've saved it to our "favorites" and then we'd probably just go to our "favorites" to get here anyways. So it probably won't matter what the final name will be chosen because there is an option that once we save it to our favorites, we can name it whatever we want to. For example, let's say the new name is Brain Matters an for those that don't like it, when you save it as your favorite, you can change the name to Doc John's forum so everytime you want to come here, you'll only see Doc John's forum under your favorite's list. Yes, you can still see the URL but how many of us really look at the URL while we read the forums?? {if anyone out there is new to the internet, I'll include links to how to save and edit your favorites at the end of this post. :-) } 3) in this world, something is going to offend someone, I've laughed at a funeral at a close friend of mine because he would've wanted me to laugh, he told me to...and yet, it offended others. Yes, to them, I shouldn't have. But between him and me, I needed to because that was our pact. Should I stay true to my friend or should I worry about offending funeral attenders (when most of them don't know him like I did). So, here is what my perspective of the bottom line would be: Doc John could've name this forum whatever name he wanted to without asking for a vote. Those of us here would've probably come here anyways no matter what the name would've been...he is gracious enough to let us vote on a long list of names and even to have three votes. To me, that is more than gracious. Running a forum is time consuming and it is my understanding that he runs two? The emphasis on initials and what the name should be , in my humbled opinion, isn't the central point to what the crux of what this forum is about. It is the folks that come here that make the difference. This poll should be fun. And those that are pulling votes in, that IS fun cause it is like Mock Election. If anyone wants to keep a name they like, campaign for it. I think that is WHERE the spirit is. Shakespeare said it best, "a rose by any other name, is still a rose" this post will probably offend someone, and that's fine. I often offend without realizing it and at this point in my life...it really doesn't matter anymore. Have to be true to meself. LOL Good day to all and I hope this new home to many of you will be a safe, happy, enjoyable, but most of all, loving one. regards, Dude PS. Lol
I just thought of something that may bring a smile to those that my post may have offended...(and it is NOT my intention to offend anyone!)
would I not buy "Caulk" because it sounds like another word. Would I not type "Clock" because if you take away the "l" it looks like another word. Would I not eat Chicken because they are mates of the Co_ks????? (Then again, some countries call them Chooks. LOL) LMAO...probably NOT. Just some "food" for thought. have a good weekend, all |
hi dude
the thing about the initials....we have been using them. like bt1 and bt2. it was brought up cuz posts are gonna have BS or BM instead. but who knows, might help in a google search. :D |

hi curious, how are you, me friend?
and ktm, thanks. LOL _____ well, I wanted to come back and say that I am grateful for democracy, and that any opinions that has been expressed here whether I agree with it or not, I support having the RIGHT to express those opinions. My intention was to point out that whether what names we pick out should have no bearing to what this forum is about. Now, I fully understand using initials and people find that offensive. But if I was say that I have a BS degree, would someone find that troubling? I think the negative connotations with words and initials have come from the society itself. If I was to say, "Bovine Defacation" would that not mean the same as BS? would BD then become the topic. LOL I know some psychologists/psychiatrists that hate the word, "Shrink" but are we NOT allowed to say "shrink?" well, probably not infront of them. cause I was gonna try an be funny and suggest, shrinkjohnsforum.shrunk LOL I think it comes down to respect. If you know someone that gets offended with certain phrase or terms, and you are in their presence. Try to avoid them. In the meanwhile, I hope they respect you back also. But when it is something for this MASS forum, it is hard to cater to individual needs and wants then it comes down to the votes. How many don't like Bush, how many don't like Kerry? But we still live in the U.S (I am using the U.S citizens as examples; I know many people from many different countries come to this forum) If we used BS as a positive term instead of negative, BS probably won't even be a topic today. LOL Let's say I coin phrased the term, "Bull Turd" and I use it as an expletive often, today, our argument would probably be that BT would be unappropriate. that is why I think while we have the right to unlike certain phrases or terms, we should campaign for the ones we like and try and get the ones we don't outvoted. But if it DOES end up BT, BS, BM, BMW, FBI, CIA, UPS, FedEX, COD. Then, let's just remember that it is SIMPLY a name(yes, there will be arguments that names represent the spirit, soul, blah blah blah. OK, that is another subject in itself) If someone had named me Elvis, I don't want to go to Graceland and Sing. If someone had named me Charles Manson, I don't want to start a cult and murder folks If someone had named me Mario, I don't want to take a big hammer and fight bad guys in a virtual world where I ride Yoshi and have to save a Princess named "toadstool" side note, should toads be mad that there is a stool named after them? LOL my friend that died whose funeral that I laughed at. It wasn't out of disrespect. And it wasn't during inappropriate times. It was to myself, in the back, thinking of the fun things that we did, and knowing that he would've wanted me to. may I tell you about my friend? He was a short black male, who finally came out of the closet. I didn't know, nobody knew until his almost dying days...he kept it from everyone... when I visited him at the hospital, I was one of the few that continued to see him because he was MY friend. we talked about many things, one of them, words... his name was Ian. One of our conversations that we've laughed about was that his name was "Ian." A black male growing up in the world of Shakwans, Raekwans, and Rakeens. He was very teased when he was growing up with a "white name" and some even called him uncle Tom. Because of his "name" We also talked about black males using the "N" word in a positive way, he said this to me, " dude, for many many years, people use the "N" word in such a negative way, the black males must bring it back and make it positive so that whenever that word is used again, it will NOT hurt anyone anymore..." I learned so much in that simple conversation we had... he was such a good guy...I wished that he could've talked about his other troubles to us while he was alive... I am not sure if anyone remembers the Cultural Revolution of China during the Communist take over. Thousands of people died over simple words. let give you a simple example: The word "WONG" means king. It is written with three horizontal liness with one verticle line crossing all three while it ends at the top and bottom line without protrusion as noted below: http://www.orientaloutpost.com/images/wang.gif if you were to take away the top line, the word becomes "MUD" or "Stupid" in the Emporic China, if you were to use the latter word infront of an Emperor or King, you would be slaughtered, your body pulled by five horses in different directions for insulting the King/Emperor of China. not only you, your whole family, not just immediate, but cousins, uncles, aunts, grandfathers, anyone related to you could be killed or exiled. And not only that, but your close friends by association could suffer the same fate... all because ONE horizontal line was taken away... during the Cultural revolution, they've changed many Chinese words to suit and unoffend the officials, and anyone found using the original words, were killed, slaughtered, tortured... I know, I've had families that went through that, and it is stories told to us by the former generations to make us remember... with this said, I am going to leave this subject alone for myself. Think I've over stated already...LOL take care, all Dude |
howdy me friend. :D
nah...you keep posting and editing. now you do remember that lil'monkley is named after a state. ;) i hope she does go to visit there. hehehe...but it would be funny if she moved there. oh..and i expect only laughs, giggles and snorts at my funeral. :D |
seems as if we have negative vibes about slang/medical terms for BS and BM - why not choose a different connotation instead of focusing on ONLY one meaning for the abbreviations? At the site below, if you enter the term BM you will find 111 terms this acronym/abbreviation is used for. Choose something more pleasant, such as Bull Moose or Blue Moon or hey, how about a Bloody Mary? Have a Big Mac if you're hungry! For BS, there's 147 entries, including Bram Stoker, Bahamas, or Big Spender (the guy who shelled out for your Big Mac :D )
When I got married, my initials became BJ - I still married the guy! (We've been married 21 years :) A friend of mine has initials BS - we refer to each other as B1 (me) and B2 (she's younger, she 's stuck with it!) :D Member the song Sebastian sang in Little Mermaid, the lyrics "Don't worry, 'bout a ting, cause every little ting, is gonna be alright," this is one of those things, truly. Relax and enjoy - we can have fun with this! Call it the Bloody Menace or Beastly Stew. Beauty & Sorrow or Burning Madness. The same could be done for NeuroTalk should it be the name chosen - call it whatever you want. Nick of Time, Nice Talking, Nightmare's Torment, whatever. Make the initials stand for what YOU choose them to. http://www.acronymfinder.com/ |
Well, I just had to check in to see how my favorite was doing. I"m glad to see it's still ahead. At least all of the talk about BM's seemed to have turned some off of Brain Matters. And Dude is absolutely right, we've all got it saved to favorites anyway. By the way, Dude, talking about the change in one line of a character, or one letter of a word, I almost sent this with your name as Dud!
But getting back to the chart of the Great Name Race, this is rather like watching snails race! :D Hugs, |
Since it's in Doc John's hands, we don't have anything to worry about. :) All of us little workers ants did the footwork for him, now he can take the load off us, and we'll be fine.
|
Just a reminder... the poll closes in 2 days!
Personally -- and this is just me -- I wouldn't vote for or against a name just because of its initials. While I think that would be embarassing for a company to do something like that, we're a little group of people. It can always be abbreviated in creative ways, too, like BrainM or such. John |
