Confused What is a decoder?

I am wanting to play a new DVD on my computer but the computer has other ideas. I have a vista and it says that windows media player cannot play the DVD because it needs a compatible DVD decoder and it is not installed.
Well first of all I don't know where I can get a decoder as I don't know what it is.
Could someone please help me with this problem. YIKES!
Bless, Doodle bug7

Default What is a decoder?

Doodle bug7.

I was hoping that one of our friends would post an answer to your Thread.

I didn’t know you could play a DVD on the computer. Maybe there is a driver from Microsoft that could help.

Come on gang lets step up to the plate.

Lightbulb

This explains it:
http://www.tech-faq.com/dvd-decoder.shtml

If you type DVD decoder into Google, some free download software is available.
Some DVDs from other countries will not play on US machines.

Here are some Microsoft links:

Unhappy

Well now we are in decoder wasteland too. The repaired laptop came home today, brought by my son. It has lost the decoder software that Dell put on it when new, when the hard-drive was changed.

So we will have to download one too. I intend to take this repaired laptop on vacation, which is always risky for safety etc.
So if it gets wet or stolen, it won't be so critical as the new Win 7 one we bought for Xmas.
