Default Phone question for my techie friends...

I have several extensions in my house, for safety and convenience purposes. I think a total of 8. Four are corded, four are not.

My old cordless croaked (I eat phones for breakfast) so I bought a new one with two handsets. This was maybe three weeks ago. Yay! It worked great!!

This morning I didn't have any dial tone. I went around and unplugged everybody, then started plugging them back in. Lo and behold, the culprit is my new one that was working fine.

Any ideas? Is it the jack? The phone itself? Too many phones? Why did it work fine for three weeks then suddenly shut down my system? Why do phones hate me?

Thank you for your input...and patience...
