I LOVE YOU!!!!!!

Even before I read your latest post, I went to my computer, I saw Avatar was in Drive E. I right clicked and it asked me what I wanted to open with, I saw VLC and I clicked on that.

I AM NOW WATCHING AVATAR.

I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I'M STILL DOOMED!!!

I still love ya Mrs. D,

BUT.

I was in the middle of watching my beautiful avatar when the screen froze, and then it changed and when I went to play it again (I took out the dvd and put it back again), it told me
'
VLC MEDIA PLAYER JUST CRASHED, DO YOU WANT TO SEND A BUG REPORT.

I clicked on Send.

Then I tried to watch it once again, and here's what I got on the screen

----------------------------------------------------------------

File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "dvd:E:\".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:E:\'. Check the log for details.

So do I uninstall the vlc thing and re-install it?

Thanks much

I'm going to give up soon.

lol

Try another DVD.... Avatar may be pushing the envelope with data. That is a complex movie, etc.

If the other DVD crashes, then yes, I'd reinstall. Make sure you have enough RAM for this?

Otherwise we wait for my son to get home. See what he thinks.

There is a site on the web my husband really likes and this link is from Kim's Komando site for another player...

http://www.komando.com/downloads/category.aspx?id=2187

You might try this one, Mel. Sometimes it is slow, so be patient.
If you click her bio link first, then often you can get into the downloads section more easily. This is a very popular and well thought of website for tech help. Her bio is very interesting too and worth reading.

Okay Mrs. D.

Tried a different DVD, a Disney one. Clicked on the VLC option to play and I got this message.

I shall now try that link you provided.

Okay, here's what happened. I went to the komando .com link that you provided and downloaded MPlayer for Windows. It's there on my screen as a desktop icon. I can open it up, (so I know it's installed).

I put in my avatar dvd, and all the options came up, Real Player, Windows Media Center, VLC, etc, BUT NO MPLAYER.

So I went to my computer, found Avatar and right clicked and it did not give me the option of opening this up in MPlayer

So how can I have Mplayer on my computer but it doesn't give me the option of using it?

And I tried to play the Avatar again using the VLC, and guess what? It worked. I played Avatar, BUT....when I went to find the chapter that I had left off (right in the middle of Avatar), the whole screen changed, (with lines on it) so no more avatar.

THEN I FOUND THIS SITE.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Now can I download this thing, and will it replace the media center I have, is it free, and will it THEN allow me to view my dvds.

I also tried to play the disney dvd in VLC, and sure enough, it played for 5 minutes, but then it stopped and the whole screen went off.

I have no idea what I'm doing.

Melody

I'm going to try and uninstall the VLC and try re-installing it.

But please ask your son what the heck I can further do to watch Avatar.

thanks much

Melody

Okay, new news.

I went to the computer place where I had my motherboard replaced, told the guy what happened, and he said "oh, what probably happened is we didn't install a decoder". So I said 'well, can you give me disc with it on, and tell me how to do it?

He said "no, you don't need to do that, I'll show you, you need to download CODEC. And he took me over to his computer, went to this site

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

and told me that they will validate that I have authentic windows software and it will prompt me to download a codec decoder.

I told him to copy and paste this link and email it me.

I returned home, checked my email, saw what he sent to me, clicked on it. I got validated, I downloaded whatever it said to download

Initially I got this message

"'windows Media player 10. This version of Windows Media technology is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more info view the info at Microsoft website".

So I checked to see what version of Media player I had by going to Control Panel and looking at add and remove programs and it indicated I had Windows Media Player 11.

So I then went back to codec and downloaded

FFDShow which is a codec pack.

I have no idea what this means, but I assumed I was downloading a dvd decoder thingee.

Well, I did the installation, it installed, I rebooted.

And when i put in Avatar and chose Windows Media Center, I get "you have no decoder".

And when i click on the option Windows Media Player, WELL IT COMES UP, but it tells me to check my resolution and lower it. I did this.

Nothing happened, so I restored my resolution to what it was before.

So what do I do now.

the guy said I needed a codec decoder. I downloaded a codec decoder. So what did I do wrong?

I'm still DOOOOOOOMEEED

lol

Melody,

P.S. I really am trying here.

Tongue

A friend of ours has a new in Aug 09 Dell laptop with Vista.
She cannot play certain things on it and gets that same message.

3 people have tried to fix it and cannot. I'll ask my son when he gets home (he is out of town now), and see what he says. Probably won't be until Monday or after, as he has to get back to work etc. He'll most likely be exhausted from Disney World!

I have to wonder however, if your drive is not working right. Playing for a while and then stopping is kind of suspect about the drive.
