Jo:

Here is the info on my hard drive, under properties.

Used - 69.1 GB
Free - 57.8 GB

Capacity. 136,317,530,112 byes 126 GB

I then did disc cleanup.

I have no idea what all this means, I'm just throwing this out there.

I have a good question for you because I just did a test on something. When Alan goes on the internet he gets the green blinking light and he loses the connections. This happens to HIM much more than it happens to me. He goes on these sites that are marketing sites, network marketing sites, affiliate program sites, etc.

So this morning at 11 a.m. I decided to see if I could play a game on the internet. I went to POGO and played Bookworm. I NEVER play games on the internet. Doesn't interest me. I've been on the internet for 15 years so I had my gaming experience.

But this morning I played Bookworm for almost one hour. NO PROBLEMS.

I then went to Start, control panel, internet options (I was trying to figure if maybe my firewall settings were doing the blinking green light thing.

I got to Windows Firewall and guess what? IT WAS OFF. I said "My firewall is not on? My firewall is supposed to be on"

Well, there I had been for almost one hour, on the internet, no problem, and I am now at the Firewall settings, I am seeing my firewall is not ON, and I check the box where it says 'ON, and all of a sudden my modem starts the green blinking light thing. I immediately turned the firewall to OFF. (Don't worry, it's no on again).

I said "wow, this is no coincidence". I turn ON the firewall settings and my dsl green light starts to blink????? so what am I to do now??

so I re-set the modem, I then went back to Firewall settings and TURNED IT ON.

I have no idea why this happened and I would love to see if this is related to why I have losing the internet connection sporadically for almost 6 weeks.

I have a sneaky suspicion that when Alan goes on certain sites, SOMETHING is interrupting the Internet Connection.

Oh, it has happened to me too. I would be on Verizon email and bam, I lose the connection, I would be on Yahoo and bam, I would lose the connection.

so how come I got to play Bookworm for almost an hour AND NEVER GOT INTERUPTED.

Any learned people out there?

lol
Melody
P.S. And just in case anyone new is coming here and reading this thread, here's he sum up

Been losing internet connection for 6 weeks. Verzion has replaced the modem twice, so I have had 3 modems in 6 weeks. Lines have been tested. They have changed my ports two times. Verzion tech people have come out 3 times and tested all wires, etc, (never was able to get into the NID), but everything else tested out satisfactory.

And I myself just went to the Modem Configuration site (can you believe I learned how to do this), and it said "connected" and all was fine.

So I don't think it's the phone line (my phone works fine and always has)

Cmon Computer people, chime in here and help me.

I'm 63 and getting to old for this stuff.
lol

the size should be smaller now that the clean up is done.
it removes old and unused files & fragments of info.

Ahh ok I just checked the save thing as it's been awhile since I fiddled with it. your file is saved as a .json file right??
that is one to use for replacing, importing or resatoring straight into FF - that's why it isn't really readable.

If you go back to your organize bookmarks -and use the export HMTL option it will save the file as a clickable active list - easier to read and verify.
the other file will have the same information just in a harder to read format.
I've saved both ways just for the heck of it.

Firewall - hmm either Alan is turning it off?? I'd ask him because you need to know how it is getting tuned off.
or a virus or malware is turning it off.

usually there is a pop up that tells you when it is turned off - a little notice in the task bar.
But my Zone Alarm has it's own firewall so it turns off the windows firewall, I don't know if you anti virus pgm does that or not?

I don't know how safe all those affiliates sites are - have you tried installing the WOT in thru Firefox Tools/addons?
It places a color coded icon showing if sites are OK or not and will even block bad ones.

info site for WOT -web of trust -

Hi.

Alan wouldn't know how to turn a firewall on OR off? He knows NOTHING about the computer except to go online. And he knows how to use Wordpad. But that's it.

I'll look into the WOT thing. I had never heard of it.

Thank you very much

Oh, and I'll look into the json thing also.

You have been a doll.

Jo, I went to the organize bookmarks but there was no option that indicated "export HMTL option"

Where is this? Thanks much

What version FF do you have? Does yours do the automatic updates?
mine is 3.6.13 - up to date.
to find your version # click Help up on the FF tool bar & then the About Mozilla Firefox - it will say the version number right under the red Firefox name.

In the organize bookmarks /import & back up - mine has 4 options - doesn't yours have these?
backup
restore
export HTML
import HTML

Okay. LOTS to tell you.

Number.1. I have the same Firefox as you. I just checked again (didn't know I had to click on import & back up. found the options you indicated. I'll go and try this again later.

Now here is something interesting. As you might have read in my previous thread about how my friend lent me her laptop, don't even bother to try and help me.

I did indeed discover where the ethernet port was. Only it's not identified as an ethernet port. It's called something else. But I digress.

I never even got to click on any Internet icons and go online.

I hooked up what I had to hook up, I plugged in the power cord, and then I opened up the laptop.

Instead of the regular screen that one sees when one opens a laptop, I got a message that said:

"THE PREVIOUS ATTEMPT TO RESTORE THE SYSTEM RESULTED IN FAILURE, DO YOU WANT TO ATTEMPT A SYSTEM RECOVERY".

I just said "uh oh", closed it up, unplugged everything and phoned my friend across the street.

I said "Have you ever used this laptop (she's is absolutely not computer literate but a relative had given her a laptop). She said "oh yeah". and I said 'you used this laptop??" and she said 'yeah why?" and I said "Have you used it since your relative returned it to you?" and she said "Oh no, I just got it back last night".

I told her what it said when you opened the laptop and she said "Oh, Yeah, she couldn't get it to stop doing that, you have to hit some buttons, or whatever".

I said "well, thank you anyway but I'm not touching anyone's laptop, so I bundled it all up and I'll return to you tomorrow".

Can you believe this. Here I got this beautiful laptop, and I open it up and I get that message.

Now I REALLY hate these things.

lol

Now I just went there, did exactly what you said to do, and then I stopped because I don't know where to save this thing. What is an clickable active list? On the bottom, it reads "bookmarks, something or other", and then I can click on save, but I don't know where I'm saving it to, and just reassure me that I'm not doing anything to the original bookmarks that are there already.

I feel like such a dummy. It's been so long since I've had to do any REAL computer stuff.

You know, simply going on the internet, well it did not make me practice my computer skills.

I am really trying to learn these things and thanks for giving me this info.

usually when I click save HTML - it pops open to my documents file and all I have to do is click Save.

If your pop up box/screen goes to desktop - you can just save it there - or just click on the left side icons for My documents - it will change to the documents area to save it there -you can change the name to something easy to find .

once it is saved in the HTML file double click it and it opens with a list of the bookmarks as live links - just click one and it opens in firefox automatically.

I thought it was poofed...
