I found the video on youtube under her account there.

Mel,
I can't tell what program it is that won't close out.
Is it Office, word pad, MS word?
I'm assuming it is a program you have on your computer. Maybe the settings for it got changed and that's why you can't exit & close it normally.
or is it a program you don't have on your computer?

Which ever one it is, maybe if you try to save it, and then use exit on the drop down in the tool bar, instead of the X.

I think you have an infection.... need some scanning.

I've had that happen a few times, as well.

Try Control +Alt+Delete

If that will not shut you down, you'll have to turn off and reboot.

Sometimes this happens when you need a cold reboot. Do you leave your computer on all the time?

I'll say this...one thing that is really bumming me out! Mozilla Firefox does this to me every time there is an upgrade:
If I have one window open on the tray, and then hit new window in File... the new window opens and HIDES the first one! So then I still only have the new window on the bottom tray! If I get busy, and forget that first one, it sits there forever, lost. I had that happen once when the first window was "loading" and it crashed my computer over time. I couldn't continue here or navigate or anything!

So look and see if you have a hidden window. I don't know what causes this, and have not found an answer yet.

put your mouse over the tab at the bottom and RIGHT click. END PROGRAM. if that doesnt work, rebooting may. if that doenst work, its probably a bug or a virus and I would scan your machine.

SuperAntispyware.com (free!) does a great job and is fast
Malwarebytes.com (free) also does a good job.
microsoft security essentials (free) from microsoft.com also does a good job and runs quietly and quickly in the background.
Many folks like AVG.com (search for the FREE edition)

good luck.

It is Microsoft word. I saved it. Didn't change a thing.

And how stupid of me to not include that link.

thanks so much for providing it.

AND I HAD NO INTERNET FOR 2 DAYS. Maybe it was the blizzard in NYC. Don't know. they are also sending me a new modem. Supposed to arrive today. But who knows. UPS can't get down any streets because NO ONE PLOWED.

So if you don't hear from me again soon, it means MY INTERNET WENT DOWN AGAIN.

I shall try and look into this thing on the bottom of my screen.

It came up again when I turned on the computer this morning.

??????

lol Melody

If those tiles are from the internet? They looked like email messages in your video...When you close the net Mozilla will put them back, when you go back on.

From a cold boot, meaning not a "restart"...nothing should reappear. A cold boot closes all windows. Meaning turning off the power...then you have some sort of infection, I think.

If it always comes back after reboot & start up, here's some things to check.

Find the settings/options /preferences in the MS Word toolbar.
I'm not sure what name they use for the settings area - but possibly in the general settings tab there should be something about "start up -" when windows starts" or something along those lines.
If you see that un check the box.

I don't have MS Word on my computer, so I can't look on mine to make sure exactly where or what the wording might be.. maybe someone else has it and can check on their machine.
I'll look for a link about it and post if I find it.

Also check your "Start" & then Programs - under Start Up - see if anything is listed to start there.

This sounds like what happens on my dh's profile - FF settings will change and I have to go reset them. check your Tab settings - sounds like it is opening new windows instead of a tab & you can set it to go to the new window or the new tab or not.
His settings on that part often gets messed up, but on my profile FF is fine.
I have the admin account and the other accounts are limited just so any major changes are only made by me.

Just to be sure - it is MS WORD {Part of MS Office?} and not WordPad that is in the XP program/accessories list??

I found a few things -
Or could be a virus or ?? that scrambled the settings...

Open up MS Word and try this settings change-

under "Word Options / Advanced / Display", named "Show all windows in the taskbar". Turning it off hides all Word icons in the taskbar but one. This way, the described behavior disappears, but at the same time, also the ease of restoring a minimized document.]

While you're in the settings/options look through all the other sections to see if anything else looks like it needs to be adjusted.

Or if there is a default button - you could just use that unless you did make changes previously.

If all else fails and you have a disk to reinstall MS Word - I'd uninstall it a reinstall to get it all back to normal.

Or if no disk, just download & install the free Open Office program - it's almost the same and you can open ms word docs with it also.

But I would try the settings first - then run scans & if still does it then uninstall/reinstall or use the other program.
