Default System Idle process?? using 80+% of CPU??

can anyone help me?

I reinstalled XP fresh about 5 times now and the system idle process is sucking up so much of the CPU!

I haven't even added any programs or downloaded any MS updates yet!

only thing running is Foxfire browser & the Thunderbird email program.

Plus the CPU usage shows it keeps bouncing between 56-95 %??

Jo,

I'm not good with the technical side of computers (like CPU usage) but my husband is a tech wizard when it comes to these things.... so I'll ask him about it when he gets home from work tonight.

What type of CPU do you have? He will probably need to know some of the details about your hardware in order to help figure out what the cause could be... if you don't want to post those details online, just shoot me a PM or email.

Liz

If you just type in "system idle process explained" in a search engine it'll bring up posts explaining what it means.

System Idle Process explained...
http://forum.osnn.net/showpost.php?p=13824&postcount=1

I get the impression it's typical, but I might also be wrong as I'm not quite awake.

If I click on Task Manager, it's the CPU percentage is fluctuating heaps. In fact when I first click TAsk Manager and I'm not doing anything else, it goes immediately to CPU usage 100% then slides down to 30% and then fluctuates at lower percentages.

jo...can you tell us exactly what programs are running?

sometimes it can be your printer...your internet service trying to do auto updates. or programs trying over and over to connect to the internet.

my hp printer came with all kinds of graffic programs. boy was it a pain to get rid of them. but they used up alot of my cpu

Hi - I think not long after this was when my mother board/cpu {one of them} quit on me. system was about 4 yrs old.

so I ended upgrading my system - MB/cpu, ram, sata HD new except for the case and my pc cards. MB had lots of built ons but saved cards just in case.

how old is your system?

We have listings on many free ad/spy/antiv/ in our useful stickys at the top of our threads here.
some miss things that another will catch -same with reg cleaners

I would try a few of each and see if you can fix it that way first.
some AV pgms use more resources that others too.

Is it only the internet that is slowed down or other programs too?
