Default Where can I find the hybernation or sleep thing

I have a HP Slimline Pavillion. Windows 7.

I've been reading about sleep buttons and hybrid sleep buttons and hybernation and for the life of me I can't find any buttons.

I went on google and it said to go to Start, then find an image of a lock and then next to that image, click on hybernation.

What image? I have no lock image, no thing that says sleep, or hybernation.

I just want to learn where these things are.

Thanks so much

Melody

Okay.

Maybe I'm dumb but I thought there was a particular BUTTON on my keyboard that I could press that puts the computer in sleep or hybernation mode.

Still got lots to learn.

I am fooling around with the previous computer. It's now in my bedroom hooked up to a monitor. I cleaned out all the files.

I would like to make it wi fi compatible, just in case I get a router in the living room

I followed directions to find out if a computer is wi fi capable. Mine is not.

I know I have to get a usb thing to plug into the tower to pick up a wifi signal (if I ever get a router).

But it appears that I have to have some software on my computer too.

All I see is Local Area Network so I know that presently my old computer is not capable of getting any wi fi signal.

What I'm trying to find out is what do I need to do to enable my OLD computer to be WI FI ready when and if the time comes.

So much to learn.

I think if you got a wireless adapter- usb or internal card --the usb type would probably be easiest for you , no opening the case to install a card , just plug in the usb part and set it up.

most have a cd included with them in the package that you can use to install any needed drivers and programs.

Just checked a Dlink USB adapter on Amazon - looks like they have the programs built in with a wizard to help w/ set up.

when you look at usb adapter & routers - best idea is to use the same brand name, just simpler that way.

Oh, so when I buy a router, I then buy a usb wireless adaptor (same brand in both) and then I hook up the router to the modem (in living room), I then go to the previous computer, stick in a usb thing and it will prompt me to install some software on that computer and then what happens?

lol

I've never used a usb wireless , but the card adapters & software -just does it's thing w/ a few clicks - then you either click a Connect button the first time or you might have a button to click and a set up thing called - WPS - (wireless protected set up) comes up so you click the button with your cursor then go to your router and push a small button on the side /edge of the router.
that's how our Dlink wireless works.

Then it automatically starts & connects every-time you start the computer.

There might be a few things to enter for the router set up - Verizon offers a wireless modem now both modem & wireless in one thing.
- and they can offer help & assistance if you use their product.
Otherwise they say they really cannot assist if you have another brand of router, but one guy I talked to helped me a lot when we had to reset everything one time.

If you do wireless you should compare the pros & cons of the Verizon product.
They may know of USB adapters that will be easiest & compatible with their product.

If you think I understood what you wrote, forget it. All I got was Dink and WPS. I'm hysterical.

But not to worry. My name is Melody, I sprout, I Vitamix, and soon I shall be WI FI Melody.

Might not be this year, but I'll get there.

lol

I added a bit more about Verizon products to it.

http://www22.verizon.com/residential...one/123765.htm

If you got the wireless modem form verizon you wouldn't need to mess with a router.

the computer close to the modem can still be plugged in with a cable & the wireless signal would go to the usb adapter on the other pc.

Oh, I have a good question. Let's say I get the wi fi adaptor thing for my old computer. I hook it into the USB port. I have several neighbors who have laptops and computers and routers. Now my friend around the corner has a laptop and no dsl line. She thought she was getting the signal from her daughter who lives upstairs but she wasn't SHE WAS GETTING IT FROM THE NEXT DOOR. She said "oh, look, who is this guy" and I said "Oh, that's Giovanni who lives next door". I said "you're getting the WiFi signal from your next door neighbor?? Does he know this??" She said "I have no idea"

So what happens if I do the WiFi thing before I buy the router?

If someone near my house has a router, do I get a WiFi signal from THEIR router? Is this legal? Would they see it on their computer? I don't want to do something I'm not supposed to do. I don't want someone knocking on my door saying "Are you getting a signal from my house? "

See why I'm confused?

Please advise me on this.

Thanks, Melody
