Or if you registered it with the manufacturer online or via mail etc.
That would be another record of date, purchase/ownership.

Sounds to me like the computer told you it was not getting
signals from the harddrive, and to connect it. This is probably the same as "crash". When you boot up the computer pings each hardware item to make sure it is functioning.

Our our Dell laptop crashed 2 yrs ago...and it did work enough to tell us the harddrive was not responding. I don't know how that can be either, but it did do that.

Our son replaced the harddrive for us and we reinstalled windows and took our files off the external backup we keep.
We didn't have restore discs for it, so lost alot of systems, like Media player etc. But it works as a backup computer if something goes wrong with this one, and we take it upNorth to download photos etc. Which I then move to this unit. The wifi still worked, when fixed etc.

I think the laptop harddrives overheat when left on for a long time.
We now keep the repaired one propped up a little so air can circulate better under it. I have an engineer's triangular ruler across the back so it is 3/4 of an inch elevated.

Thanks everyone.

I'm still looking. And have been really upset about it.

I know we paid by check, so I don't think its going to help.

I can't remember if I registered it with the manufactur.

But I will look later. Its the one my husband bought me
for my birthday and christmas present together last year.

Late because the one I was using had finally given out.

So I really hate this. Derrick is the main one that uses
it. So we are even debating just finding a good buy
for him to buy one.

But it doesn't take care of this one.

Ugh.

In general.... laptops are not long lived computers. IMO. Hubby's
HPs from work average 2-3 yrs and then are replaced.

We've had problems with both the older Dell (harddrive failure) and the newer Win 7 that somehow got a devastating virus.

My old Dell tower is plugging along ...I think it is 8 yrs old now.
It does have a new harddrive--son replaced the old one because he didn't trust it --said it was making a funny noise--(dells have poor harddrives)...so now it is a seagate big one. We've also added RAM to it over the years.
Knock on wood....

I suppose a lot depends on how they are used and if they get carried around a lot.
My old Gateway is a factory refurbished one and it is a 2004 I think.

Well I found the original box.

And it still has the price tag and the walmart tag showing I bought
it there.

You know the little blue tag they use when you have to leave
other than front registers.

Anyway, still no sign of original receipt. But i think I'll try
taking it and seeing if they can look it up.

With the box and things. I will keep you updated.

I can only be told they can't.

Well I took the computer to a shop.

Its the harddrive.

I am having it fixed. Because it will have antivirus.
And a 2 year warranty. And it cost me under 250.00.

I decided it was cheaper than buying a new one and starting
over. And I can let Derrick help me with the bill.

Went and got the Toshiba today.

Its working very good. We will see it might turn out better
than when new. Its kind of like a new one now anyway.

Thanks for trying to help.
