Blush embarassing

This is so embarrassing, there are some very funny jokes about seniors and computers and they are all true.

I did get myself added to Outlook. It said 'Log on' ....um..log on to what? I guess it meant log on to the computer which is what I was trying to avoid in the first place as I didn't want to take my sis off as the user. I'm afraid to take her off, I don't know what will happen to automatic updates, shes administrator (repairs?), etc, Does it matter? I was going to just add myself as computer user but I don't know her password and was afraid I couldn't get back on as her, I have a shortcut now. Shes in Finland, I don't know if she will answer email to try to get password if she remembers it. I'm also not sure why she chose to visit Finland during the worst winter since the last ice age.

I thought Outlook was a business email thing and only talked to itself? When I click on their 'contact us' link it opens Outlook 'to' their email address and 'from' my sisters Outlook. I got rejected as spam when I pasted their email address onto my usual email and sent that. Will it work if I erase my sisters address and put in mine?

Thanks'
Judi

It will be much simpler for you if you just sign up and use Yahoo or Gmail - you won't have to mess with Outlook or settings.

You can choose any name for your new email address ( it will let you know if that name is already being used, then you just add something or make a new name till it is accepted), you'll still get your other email how ever you get it now.

I have 5 different email addresses, just because..

About the computer admin account, If you can't sign on to the admin account how are you using it now, as a guest or a limited user?

Those accounts can't do too much as far as major changes, only the admin/owner account can do those.
I just checked and my dh isn't allowed to make a new user, he has a limited account. I'm the admin/owner, main pc fixer person..
Guest account can do even less.

If sis gives you the password then you can use her admin accnt to make a new user account for you to use & I would leave her admin as it is.

If Outlook asks for a log on- she has a password set up for security reasons, I do the same thing - a password to log on to my computer admin accnt & password for my email to open.

Businesses often use Outlook because it has a lot of built in extras for organizing, meetings, and contacts.

[Will it work if I erase my sisters address and put in mine? ]
You can try it and see. It won't break anything.

Oh was it a link to contact the clean air agency??
and that's when Outlook opened up?
If so now I understand.. I thought you were trying to contact the Outlook dept at Microsoft.

Yes a contact us link will pop up the default email program- it may or may not work to send an email with your address.
It depends on if your sister had the same kind of email provider.

example-
A gmail email can't be sent with a yahoo email address as the main one in outlook or any email program

I guess I will give up. My sis finally got back to me but apparently has forgotten her password. I am using the computer 'as her' through a short cut log on (don't know what it is actually called), I just click on an icon. I don't know if they will have problems when I try to get it serviced, I will try to rattle her cage a little more and see if she comes up with anything.

Yes, the Outlook opens on the link to contact clean Air. I think her old provider may have been a weird one and doubt that they are using that.

Thank you everyone for trying to help. Icehouse, can i adopt you?

Judi

yeah, like you want a 38 yr old divorced alcoholic with a cane as a kid....

Anyway, like JO said, when a web page is created there a several ways to post email information. The simplest is to just have your email displayed as text on the web page as people can copy and paste the email address into their own email program (Outlook, Windows Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc) or the email address on the web page can be made to be a link. That means when someone hovers their mouse over the email link on the website and click it opens that particular computers default email program (normally Outlook).

NOW, this can be changed easily. This change is done in the web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) Go to the OPTIONS menu in the browser and look for the Application or Email tab. In there you will see an option for email (mailto) and the default program, change this to whatever you like. I know that Firefox has options for like Gmail and Yahoo...

Then, once you have made that change, you will be able to click on any email link in a website and your email program will open.

But, if you dont have Administrator rights on the computer (your sister) you may not be able to do that. Give it a try though.

SOOOO, if you dont, here is another fix, but not for the faint of heart. Change the administrator password yourself.

If you have the Windows CD....keep reading....if not, then forget about it...

-------------------------------

- Boot using Windows XP Setup CD
- When it asks to repair your existing Windows installation, accept it and press "R" to run the repair.
- Setup will start repairing your Windows and will start copying files, etc.
- Setup will restart your system and when it restarts don't press any key when it shows "Press any key to continue..."
- A small progressbar with a few details will do its thing, when it shows "Installing devices", press <Shift>+F10 keys in your keyboard.
- It'll open a Command Prompt window. Now type nusrmgr.cpl and press the <Enter> key.
- This will open the User Accounts window where you can reset the password for the Administrator and any other user on the computer.

When thats done either log into the Administator account (your sister) or whatever...

Um, enjoy!!

If you just had a brain aneurysm I am sorry...

For the webmail - (yahoo or Gmail etc) if you make an account on one of them-

Also Instead of using their contact us form -
if you can get or find online somewhere the actual email address of the place you want to contact - just copy & paste it -when you are logged into your online webmail account to send it.

I totally forgot you can remove the passwords or change them on XP. If you have a XP CD. I've even done it long ago.

I think if you right click on that default email box, the address shows. I've done it a few times long ago.

I don't get those anymore for some reason.

I would definitely just copy the address you need and use your own email. Since Yahoo increased their memory for free customers, we just use them. I've NEVER had a Yahoo problem EVER. And when "someone" tried to hack our 10yr old family account, they sent us a quick message to change the password.
I really appreciated that.

Just so you know, and it's probably not connected to the noise you're hearing, but if I have left a CD in the drive then my computer makes a strange noise booting up and shutting down.

If I understand you all correctly it may be my email, will try another. I tried to sign up for Facebook some time ago and got rejected there too, it said I needed a different email address.

I tried to right click on their link and it said 'copy email address'. That's what I tried to do before but maybe it will work with different email.

"Go to the OPTIONS menu on the browser"... I can't find that....does Fisher Price make a computer?

I'm not feeling very well so it might take me a day or two to get on this but will try a different email.

Thanks,
Judi

Judi, when you right click and see the 'copy email address' then left click on that. The box will disappear. Then go to your email account and start a new message. Right click on the space where the TO: is and paste the email address into the new email message by right clicking and then left click on paste. It works with ALL email addresses, even yours.

FB rejected an email address? Thats a new one to me.....

I only use Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, so I am not sure about where the email default program thing is in Internet Explorer....

Firefox: Options -> Options -> Applications -> mailto
IE: Tools -> Internet Options-> Programs (somewhere in there) ??

I hate to see someone not be able to use simple features of a computer. Please feel free to ask anything, even silly, as I have been doing tech support for 12 years.....heck, send me a PM if you like and I will call you and walk you through it over the phone (if I can)....

Hope ya feel better....
