Yesterday I ran AVG (as I do every day) and it found:
Corrupted Section Win 32K.SYS [text] Eng ....... Corrupted Section Win 32K.SYS[text XLA ......... The ENG thing was found twice and the XLA seven times. AVG told me to hit File and it showed <unknown> Object is hidden by a kootkit technique (which is often used by a malicious software). Do you really want to remove it? I told it that I really wanted to remove it and AVG told me and asked me all sorts of things I'd never heard of and did not understand. Yikes ........ am I OK?

If it is removed and your computer still works fine, then you should be OK..
But I would also scan with Malwarebytes & superantispyware, just to make sure. What was the full name of the root kit?? did it tell you the full name? If you have the full name then you can Google it or go to one of the top antivirus sites to learn more about it. and sometimes they will have a special download to remove that exact problem. Thank you Jo .... what I wrote was an exact quote of what AVG told me. That's sure all I know.
I've been concerned about friends emailing me to say that I sent them something bad but that hasn't happened. I'll look for Malwarebytes & superantispyware and see if I can figure out what to do with them - lol Thanks again.

Oh good grief. I just read my post and saw the critical typo. I'm so sorry!!
I wrote "kootkit" and just like you said it's "rootkit".

Another thought is to back up critical files -- documents and photos, etc., before permitting any changes to your HD. I'd store those files external to the drive you're working on. If a prob. displays, those files may be "cleansed."
