Okay, here are two new questions from me.
Isn't the picture supposed to change when you hold it another way? I've seen people turn their phones and tablets and the picture changes when they do that. My tablet (well I have to keep it upright). If I turn it, the picture does not automatically correct itself) So. 1. Is it supposed to correct itself when I turn the tablet? 2. I just made a video showing the screen that I am seeing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMzWDH1frsc I know it's ME and not the tablet. I'm completely ignorant of this touch tap technology. But hey, I found out how to bring up the virtual keyboard (but don't know how to make it go away) I found out how to tap on an unlocked wi fi signal but don't know what to do after that? And when I tap on the home icon, I get a google search thing but it doesn't take me anyway. See why I'm confused??? lol lol lol Hey for $59.99 I'll practice till the cows come home. I can just imagine what I would have gone through had I purchased an IPAD. NOT ready for that yet!!! Melody P.S. Thanks to anyone who can teach me this. I wish someone would make a video holding this tablet and they would say "See Melody, this is how you do THIS? and THAT? I mean, I teach sprouting to people, why can't people teach me TABLETS? lol lol lol Melody |

I pressed SOMETHING and I got a screen that is giving me options to get lots of free stuff, like Youtube for Android 4.0 and other youtube for android stuff, and kindle stuff. Now how on earth do I know what version of Android do I have. I have a Cruz Velocity tablet, that's all I know. And I know I'm probably driving all of you crazy but I AM LEARNING. lol Melody |
Hmm, reading the manual makes it sound like you have to have a Google account to use the damn thing, then use the widgets to get around, like Chrome, GPS, calendar and stuff...
There has got to be a way to access just a normal browser without signing in.....maybe I will Google it...:) |

I have MUCH to learn, but I know me, once I get it, I'LL GET IT!!!! And this is so much different than using a desktop computer. Been using computers for over 30 years. Back in the day my company chose me (our of 200 employees) to be the only one to go to IBM computer school. They then gave me the first desktop in my office. And the first dot matrix printer. I remember this like it was yesterday. And now I have this toy in my hand that I go tap tap tap and I'm supposed to go on the internet?? funny Melody |
what if you type http://www.youtube.com/ into the search area?
Oh I was thinking you had the Nexus ... Since YouTube videos are mainly FLV (Flash Video) files, and Adobe Flash is unsupported on Android 2.0, YouTube through the browser app is not natively supported on the Cruz. See also for more info: Will it work on my Cruz? A 3rd party app like the ones mentioned here can provide some YouTube video playback functionality. app YouTube is a low-res app available online. appSkyfire is another app that allows for some Flash video functionality. http://cruzsupport.velocitymicro.com...ube-on-my-Cruz Not sure which model # you have T 100 etc? |

And if I can't get on youtube, and I can't get on Facebook, WHY can't I get on FB. See, I just need to know if I need to download an app. Because if I can't get on FB and I can't view youtube, what good is this Tablet? And I wonder if I can go on yahoo. I'll keep trying and if you hear anything, please let me know. Thanks much Melody P.S. I have figured out how to use this thing. I know how to bring up wi fi and it indicates I'm CONNECTED. It says Connected to linksys. So I brought up the virtual keyboard and typed in ebay.com, yahoo, com and anything else. It just brought me back to google search where all the links were for these websites. So I tapped on ebay.com. Brought me to google search again. Tapped on yahoo.com (hoping this would bring me to yahoo.com). Nope, I just got a google search thing again. Which tells me I am NOT on the internet. Later on today I am bringing this to a computer guy who has a store a few blocks from where I live. He has a router. If he CAN'T get me on the internet, then I am returning this thing. I mean, what the heck is a tablet for if not to get you on the internet. Thanks much Melody |
Quote:
Question Number 1. Don't I have to be ON THE INTERNET to download an ap?? Question Number 2. When I tap on Linksys it says: linksys - Status - connected Security - Open Signal Strength - Fair Link speed - 52Mbps Then it gives the IP address Then it gives me the option to Forget or to Cancel (I know what this means). so what do you make of this? Thanks much Melody |
Quote:
Maybe I am UNCONNECTING myself when leaving that screen? When I am viewing the Wi Fi connections (all the stuff has locks next to them, and then there is the word linksys which is unsecured). So in order for me to try and go on the internet, what I have been doing is tapping on the home button, bringing up the virtual keyboard and going nowhere. Exactly what do I do (to go on the internet) while I am viewing all the wifi choices. It indicates I'm connected. Exactly what do I do next to go on the internet? Do I not tap on the home button which brings me to the main screen? This might be my problem. So if someone can tell me "Melody, while you have all the wi-fi options in front of you and you see that it says connected, THIS IS WHAT YOU TAP NEXT to get on the internet. Once I know THIS, I just might be able to do SOMETHING. Thanks much Melody P.S. And this is a good question. Does it indicate on the main screen that I am CONNECTED. I don't know what I have to see for me to say "Oh, I'm getting good signal strength, I'm connected" thanks Oh, I looked at the upper right (where there are supposed to be bars??) No bars |
it would be nice if there was a 10in screen version

So to get out of THAT screen and go on the internet, I tap the BACK icon (on top of the tablet) and I'm whisked to my main screen, I go to the bottom, hit the "internet icon", I then see the google search screen, but then that's it. So how come it says I'm connected but when I leave that particular screen, I don't go anywhere. I need to 1. Make sure that I can leave that wi fi screen (where it indicates I'm connected), and WHAT'S THE VERY NEXT STEP?? See my dilemma? I guess I'm going to have to go outside and stand in front of a wi fi hotspot and see if I can get on FB or Ebay or WHATEVER!!! But i have stuff to do today. So tomorrow morning, I'm bringing it to breakfast with me. Let's see if I establish a good signal. It's the only thing that makes sense here. It's indicating that I AM connected, but then I'm NOT!!! Hate this. lol Melody |
SUCCESS!!!! Well, a little anyway.
I stood in my doorway and surprise, surprise, I got on the internet. First one was ebay.com Second one was Facebook (only how do you sign in if you don't know how)? Is there a special FB app that lets you sign in. I tapped the screen to try and bring up the virtual keyboard but had no luck. Then....I went to youtube (made a video). But when I finished making MY video my tablet informed me that "Youtube does not support Flash) which you already mentioned. So what I found out today was. If I stand in my doorway, I can get on the internet SOMETIMES. I can't sign into anything because I don't know what I'm doing. And then I went into another room, turned it back on, checked the wi fi signal strength IT SAID EXCELLENT. but it would not let me connect to the internet. What the h am I doing wrong? I'm going out later, I'll try and connect and will report back to you. I have MUCH to learn. I also have an online sprouting friend who is a TABLET NUT. I just found out. She has an ipad, and two androids so if anyone knows tablets it has to be her. lol You KNOW I am emailing her with all my questions. lol Thanks much Melodyh |
I think I am learning more from you now! I suspect that the device itself may not have a very good wifi receiver, maybe thats why its spotty.

I am NOT liking this tablet. Can't do anything on it. Don't like that android does not support youtube. So here is what I'm thinking. I just need another source to get my email and access some forums. I'm thinking IPOD TOUCH. Been around for years. So now I have questions (in case I return this $59.99 piece of you know what) and get an IPOD TOUCH. 1. It has built in wi fi right? So I just get a wi fi signal and I can access the internet right (I don't are about gaming and I do know about itunes so this can be my ipod also, because my older ipod is 7 years old). So when I go out walking, I would also have an IPOD right? 2. It uses the same operating system as the IPAD (I just did some googling on this). So CAN I ACCESS YOUTUBE AND FACEBOOK with the Ipod touch? 3. And I wish someone would tell me how they sign into FB and other things with these touch tap screens. I know that the Itouch would have a virtual keyboard right? 4. I am now going to watch some youtube videos and learn the IPOD Touch. My niece has all these gadgets and I'm going to ask her to lend me an ITouch (she has a whole house full of gadgets). So if anyone has an IPOD TOUCH, do you go on Facebook, do you go on youtube and can you get your Verizon email? That's all i need to do. I have a regular computer and all I need is a little portable thing to do these simple things. Thanks much Melody |
when you get to any of those websites , there isn't a "sign in" or "log in" area?
usually it's in the upper right corner, maybe you have to tap that to open the log in screen? something about FB- http://campuslife.asus.com/index/321...ndroid-tablet/ Have you tried to see if there are any updates? http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/go...one-or-tablet/ generally - if something says it has wifi - you can use hot spots or neighbors wireless connections |
Well, glory be. I have news for you all.
I walked into Radio Shack, walked up to a 20 year old, saying "I just bought this tablet and before I buy one from your store that will cost me an arm and a leg, I thought I'd cut my teeth on this $59.99 little gadget" "Can you help me and get me a wi fi signal so i can test this?" He looked at me and said 'Do you know computers?" I deadpanned and said: "Over 35 years ago my employer chose me out of 200 employees and sent me to IBM computer school". And when I bought my first desktop 30 years ago, it was an IBM, and it cost $3700 and it had a 20 megabyte hard drive and a mono screen with a green cursor". Well, the guy got so excited he shouted to the other 20 year old employee and said "This lady went to IBM computer school, SHE WENT TO IBM" I burst out laughing. The guy took my table and said "Give me this thing, OMG, it's got old software, let me re-set it for you". He did his thing, he changed the date and time, he showed me how to do stuff, he got the wi fi signal, he GOT ME ON FACEBOOK, showing me how to sign in, etc. etc. I shook their hands and blessed them, learned about all the OTHER TABLETS that Radio Shack sells, including a $199 4.0 version of Cruz Velocity that does everything. So I'm going to practice on this one and if I ever get rich, I'll buy the better version. BUT I'M ON THE INTERNET. I came home, and practiced what I just learned. I'm still learning. Now to have FUN!! lol Thanks VERY much to all of you who helped me. Melody |
Well, A LOT HAS HAPPENED in the past 3 days. While I was communicating with a family member about how I got this $59.99 tablet but was having difficulty learning it and going on FB and youtube, well the next day she calls me up and says "I bought you something, you'll get it tomorrow"
Well, look at what she bought me KINDLE FIRE. Of course I had to make a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0dBgAQ5DdQ This thing was MADE for me. Sure I had to learn how to use it but my friend who lives on the mountain is teaching me. She's a tablet expert. Never knew this because we only talked about sprouting. lol I have one question . The kindle fire has a default thing in that when it's not in use it shuts off (after 7 or 10 minutes, something like that). So when I'm watching a video, this is what happens. I'm not touching it so it goes off. I have to learn how to UN-DEFAULT this. If this is at all possible. No big thing. I'm sure it's a setting I have to un-set or something like that. But this thing is SO cool!!! Melody FINALLY has a tablet (actually 2) I'm using the other one when the kindle is charging. I'm not returning a tablet that I paid $59.99 and I can do email and do everything else and I will get it to go on youtube and I GOT ON FB with it. I like to learn so I'll practice on the Cruz Velocity. And....Verizon is sending me a modem/router combo for free. This is SO cool!!! lol lol Mel |
Quote:
If you can't afford an IPAD, you should get a Kindle Fire. I've learned more in two days just from watching youtube tutorials and emailing my friend who lives on a mountain top and knows ALL things tablets. I even learned about something called a Google TV. Technology is going to roll right over us if we let it. At least I am able to be in my kitchen and watch any video and do cooking and doing my sprouts. And it was thundering and lightening outside last night. Couldn't get a cable signal because we have satellite and I still was able to watch General Hospital. I think this is SO cool. lol, Melody |
Okay, I am about ready to switch modems. The new Gateway modem came the other day. It has a little antennae on it. The modem is
Verizon D-Link and on the front it says Wireless ADSL2+Router It has 4 ethernet things on it. They say Lan 1, Lan2, Lan3, Lan4, then there's the power plug and the dsl line. So here is what I just need to know. Since the inputs (is that the right word?) on this new modem/router is exactly the same as the back of my old modem, I just unplug the old one and take the connections and just re-plug into the new one right? But do I do this with the PC turned off? So what are the steps. Shut off old modem, disconnect it, connect new modem, plug it in, turn power on??? Then do I have to sync it up with the PC or it does it by itself? I can't remember, it's been a long time since I hooked up a modem. I believe I don't have to do anything right? I just hook it up and it will blink green and then I'll be all set? Well as far as the PC is concerned right? Then after this new one is hooked up, I get my kindle and sync that up with a wi fi signal from the new modem/router? Did I get the steps right? I just don't want to start doing this before I know what I'm doing. Thanks much Really need your input before I go and change modems, etc. Melody |
Verizon is DSL and still uses a phone line, so you have to have the userid and password information.
Turn off the PC, unplug the old Verizon modem. Plug the phone line into the new modem. Plug the PC into the new modem using the supplied ethernet cable. Turn on new modem. Turn on the PC. Open a browser window and go to the URL (website address) that is on the sheet of paper that came with your new modem. Enter the userid and pw and the it will ask you a couple questions. The Internet light on the modem should come on full green. Then click on the wifi part of the same screen and enter the WEP password that is on the bottom of the modem (or on a sheet of paper). The wifi signal should come on. Then disconnect the enternet cable and go to your wifi on the laptop or kindle. You will look for the ESSID number (name of your wifi) in the list of available networks, enter the pw and that should be it. I have the same one at home :) |
Quote:
Why am I disconnecting the Ethernet cable. I'm just adding the kindle and that's why I got the new modem/router. I'll be honest, that is NOT what the Verizon person told me I had to do. They said (this was BEFORE I received it). I was told "just unplug the old modem, and plug in the new one and then sync up your wi fi device' Again, why am I disconnecting the ethernet cable? Melody |
Quote:
And you dont HAVE to disconnect the ethernet cable, but on some computers if the cable is plugged in its the DEFAULT and will override the wifi. If you unplug the ethernet cable then the computer will look for the next best thing, the wifi. |

And I remember last year I had modem problems. (not this modem/router thingee but regular modem). Last year I had 4 modems in 4 weeks. They would all go out. They would work for a while but I would get a red light. And I never had to do anything but unplug and re-plug. No entering of passwords no nothing. The 4th modem they sent me was the charm. I unplugged the 3rd one and plugged inthe 4th one and that's the one I have right now. And I know exactly what I'm going to do. I'm going to call the Verizon tech guy tomorrow and have him walk me thorugh this. With my luck if I do it alone I'll screw it up. lol Thanks very much for your patience. Melody |

I hooked up the modem/router. No problem at all. Didn't have to do ANYTHING. It synced up itself, I went online. NO PROBLEM. Then I took my kindle fire, selected wi fi, tapped on "Add wi fi Network", gave it a name, and GOT LOST AFTER THAT. I took out the little booklet that came with the new modem/router. It gave me an IP ADDRESS and said to go online and do this and that and I just stared at the screen and said "This is where I call Verizon' so I called Verizon tech support and got a nice gal who said "You are at the right screen, let's check". I gave my new wi fi network a new name. But after that she tells me 'Well, we here at Verizon have limited information on the Kindle Fire so I have to transfer you to Verizon Expert Tech Support and they will charge you". So I politely thanked her, said no thanks and hung up. I then went back to my kindle and the little pamphlet and tweaked some things on the kindle, and it prompted me for a password, I hit on "connect" and I could not, it kept giving me error messages. I said 'okay, let's call back Verizon, maybe SOME OTHER PERSON WILL KNOW MORE THAN THE LADY DID" So I got this nice guy. I told him what happened, we tried to do a screen sharing but for some reason my Internet Explorer would not work so I was already on Google Chrome and I had the screen in front of me anyway (that he would have accessed if we did the screen sharing' I told him "walk me through this, I can follow directions. I changed my user id. Then he tweaked some WPA settings and some other settings which I have no idea what he was doing. THEN, he told me to go down to security and he said "That's your password, go ahead and change it". I did. He said "now go and access your new wi fi network on your Kindle Fire'. IT WORKED. I have a brand new wi fi network. It will automatically go there whenever I turn on my kindle fire. And the guy says "I know nothing about Kindle Fires, thank god we could do this'. I said "And people are supposed to KNOW THIS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, REALLY???" He burst out laughing and said 'Actually, NO they don't" I then said I don't know who the hell you are BUT I LOVE YOU' He laughed so hard I thought he would fall off his chair (if he indeed was sitting on one). I said "I can't thank you enough" I am now set up and thank god. So I hope I gave you a good laugh and I don't ever want to do this again. I hate technology BUT I LOVE IT AT THE SAME TIME. When other people do it for me. But thankfully I can learn stuff even at my age. Holy Moly!! lol Melody |
Great job! Enjoy the Kindle and now you have wifi to boot!!

OMG, but at least I can watch my videos in peace. And it supports Flash which is amazing. But I learned one thing. Watching a movie uses up the charge. So now it's charging. But I can watch MOVIES!!! love it. I can only imagine if I had this 40 years ago. lol Melody |
Can it be used while plugged in, unless you want to go away from an outlet?
Or must it be charged and unplugged before using it? Laptops can be used plugged in or on battery alone. In fact I removed the battery on my old laptop since it is plugged in when we are using it and unplugged when not used. |
Quote:
It really is a marvel. But I noticed that when watching videos, the battery us used up faster. So now I know that once I finish watching a video (I'm talking MOVIE here), I'll just plug it in and re-charge it. Melody |
