Default Source File

How do I make a source file to be linked to a destination file? I have directions on how to link the source file to the destination file but the book doesn't go into how to make a source file. This is in Word.

I'm not sure if this is what you are needing- but I'll try.

A source file is any file that you are using as a source of info {where the info is located}

the destination file is where your are copying or sending the info to

My daughter has my Word disk so i don't have it re installed yet since my pc crash & rebuild.

to check most things I close the program and then reopen it and then see if the link or attachment is there or not.

I hope that helps you.

Hi Jo,

I'm wondering if the source file has to be saved with a special file extension? Thank you for the information.

I just got Word re-installed now, but I think I need more details about what you are trying to do?

Is this for a document that you want to link a source file too?

I only have Office 97 Pro - so if you have a much newer version I may not be able to help too much.

Maybe someone that is more familiar with Word will pop in and help.

Hi again Jo,

I have Office 2003 but what you have and mine maybe similar enough.

In answer to your question, the source file would be for a document I would like to link to as say a newsletter per say. If it's a lot of trouble don't worry cause it's not mandatory to know. I was just wondering how to do it as when I learn something I also get very inquisitive about the whole process. Also, if there's a way, I'll find a personal way for it's use. I have already used mail merge in my personal use but of course that is more useful perhaps than a source file.

Have you tried using the little assistant characters to see if they can help explain it or show you how to do it?

You're ahead of me - I haven't used mail merge in Word at all - LOL

Hi Jo,

I tried to use help but couldn't find what I wanted. And two heads are better than one too. You explained perfectly what source file and destination file are. Thank you. I think I'll try to concentrate on getting through my Word book instead of trying to know everything that it doesn't explain. Thanks anyway.

I use mail-merge in Word to send out my Xmas cards using an .xls list to create labels. It can generate the whole list, or a whole page of just one address
(return address label). Sometimes it can get confusing, especially if you want to customize the labels' fonts and sizes, italics, bold, etc. It usually screws up in formatting and I have to do it more than once. But I forget from one year to the next, since I don't use it that often.
