What does this sound like to the computer savy?

My computer first started running real slow, it was acting like it was freezing. Then the start up screen upon start up turned white, with a big ! saying my active desktop was turned off. When I click on restore active desktop I get the message it can not be done, some sort of error.

ALSO MY windows live 1 care security system has been turned off & it will not allow me to turn it back on. I tried un-installing it, it worked for awhile but got turned off again & will not allow me to turn it back on. I've tried calling microsoft but keep getting bounced around from one foreginer to another, & they can not even attempt to tell me what to do, they keep sending my call to someone else.

Now my computer will hardly pull up a program to even get back in there & remove windows live 1 care again & try another security program.

SO what does everybody think, what 's going on with my computer.

Oh by the way it's a HP laptop , only about 8 months old.

RIght now I'm using my husbands desk top.

do you have a restore disk set? Did any come with the Laptop?

Or it should be under warranty still?
If so use that option first just in case it is a hard ware problem/glitch.

If you download a lot of programs or get a lot of FWd emails, spam, or sign up on many websites for stuff - you may have gotten a virus of some sort.

If so you might need to do a restore of your Operating system files.

I was able to reorder some HP restore disks only about 18.00.

But check in to the warranty coverage first.

Thanks, Yes I purchased a extended warranty. I've always had something go wrong & have had to use my extended warranties.

I know that with some anti-virus software installed, it has to be disabled before a system restore can take place. Have you - while not connected to the Net - turned off virus protection and tried restore?

I'm also on an HP laptop, BTW. I use Norton. It does have to have some prefs. turned off completely in order to perform a restoration.

Did you purchase your 'puter through Best Buy? If still under manufacturer warranty, I'd go straight to HP. Best Buy is merely the "middleman."

Yep, some virus, trojan or some other nasty thing might be doing it, sometimes they can bring a system to a crawl.
Can you download off your desktop or yours if it will let you Adaware, Spybot search & destroy, AVG free edition and install them onto your machine and then run them all one after the other.
System restore as Bobbie mentioned is worth a shot to.

If you can get windows to open, do a ctrl+alt+delete. Then look in the processes, at the bottom it will tell you how much cpu is being used. If it is going up and down from 50% to almost 100% look in the processes to see which one is using up the most. Then write it down as this is probably the culprit.

This should help you narrow it down to either a hardware or software problem. If it is hardware, you might need more of a techie to look at it, and in some cases even if it is a software problem ie: viruses etc.
Sometimes it is very difficult to get the viruses, or trojans off of a computer.

I have found that if once a year I reinstall windows, doing a complete format and install, it keeps my computer in tip top shape. This is if all the hardware is in good shape. Hard to say what it is without sitting right there, but I hope this helps you narrow it down.
