Default My computer is harrassing me!

My SIL did a remote scan last night as he completed installing a new virus protection program (ESET Nod32).

Now when I attempt to go to a website, I frequently get this popup that won't go away:

NOTICE: You have not completed the scan. If your computer has tracks of all adults site you have visited and files that got installed while you were browsing, it may violate your online privacy and compromise your career and marriage.
You need to clean up all the temporary and history records of your computer to remove these tracks.

Would you like to install PCPrivacyCleaner to scan for and clean these compromising tracks, if found, now? (Recommended)

Grrrr! There have been no "adult" sites visited by my computer! Why is my computer harrassing me?

Do not click on it! I have been told there are several very clever ways to try to attack you and this may be one of them. The "compromise your career and family" line is pretty much a give-away that this is a scheme. I am not sure what you need to do, as when a similar pop-up appeared on the screen of my Mac I was told by my local Genius Bar at the Apple store to just ignore it. It did eventually go away.

lefthanded, I agree with you it is most likely a spam message, but it actually bumps me out of the website I am trying to visit. It won't go away! It is sporadic enough that I can work around it, but it is very determined!

Must be time to call and beg my SIL for more help. Thanks!

Now we know why you haven't been posting much lately..Not here, anyway.
Does it keep coming up if you block pop-ups?

the support page for your AV program-
http://www.eset.com/support/index.php
documents /manuals -
http://www.eset.com/download/manuals.php

there should be a setting you can change so it's not so restrictive - Or have SIL check it out.
I hadn't heard of that AV program before.

We do have in the sticky thread some suggested free AV/anti spyware/ malware programs -
if the program keeps driving you nuts just uninstall it and try another one.

DO NOT CLICK ONTO IT TWINK!

I once had something similar pop up frequently, and once I clicked onto the X to get rid of it, and all of a sudden all sorts of carp started downloading onto my computer. I had to shut my PC down quickly then do a scan to make sure no harm had been done.

Totally ignore it Twink, it'll eventually go away.

I use Geeks to Go to solve my problems... it sounds like a malware/trojan problem to me. I did some Google searching, and there are problems you can download to get rid of it. But if you want some fairly good quality advice, I'd advise going to the "Geeks to Go" website.

I Googled the name of the program and found this:

The Malwarebytes research team has determined that PCPrivacyCleaner is a fake anti-malware application.

Rogue software uses intentional false positives to convince the user that their system has been compromised and then demands money to remove these false threats. In extreme cases the false threats are actually the very trojans that advertise or even directly install the rogue. If PCPrivacyCleaner has been installed on your system without your permission or you are seeing popup advertising or recommending that you use PCPrivacyCleaner your system is infected with the zlob trojan. You are strongly advised to follow our removal instructions below.

Going to try to remove the dern thing. If you don't hear from me for awhile, you'll know why.

Alan clicked on one of those malware things.

It screwed up my hard drive because you can't run two anti-virus programs at the same time.

I asked Alan "why on earth did you download this"?? and he said 'well, the thing popped up, I thought it was from Verizon, it told me I was in danger if I didn't do the download. etc. etc."

So I told him "I don't care what pops up, if it tells you it's the end of the world as you know it... DO NOT CLICK ON ANY POP UPS, AND DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM THE INTERNET".

Thankfully, he hasn't done this again.

My god, you can't even let your husband on the computer anymore. lol

Default Problem Solved!

Whew! I spent hours last night trying to rid my computer of this (yep, you were right) malware/trojan thing. It fought me every step of the way!

I bought and downloaded a program to fix it, but finally ended up googling the name of the evil malware to get a FREE fix!

Ahhhhh, I feel so much better now! Thanks for your concern and input!
