right now, hubby says he can't even get it to boot up. :(

so i guess the main thing will be to make sure the next one is protected.

oh..he also wasn't using a firewall or virus protection. never loaded any of the links to software i gave him. not even spybot.

oy.

who moi 06-11-2008 01:30 PM

he can't even boot it in safe mode??

If he can boot it in safe mode, try booting it safe mode with networking.

if he can boot on safe mode with networking: go here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

run the anti-virus on line for free. See what it finds.

Then,

Download adaware free:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

update it, unplug it from the net, then run it in safe mode.

after it catches whatever, run it again.

Then,

download superantispyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/

update it, don't run it. See if he can boot back regular

now run super anti-spy

then, run hijackthis from trendmicro. Email me the log file and we'll see if we can scan all the intruders.

My guess is that his computer has been hijacked. And the more likely scenerio is someone was doing some serious person 2 person sharing.

But that's just my guess

i had major probs a couple yrs ago - reinstalled xp so many times thought it wore out my xp CD- got a replacement copy from MSoft and found out it was something else causing the prob.

then thought it was the Hard drive /viruses or MB or CPU
so tried new HD was still broke - cheapest fix to try first - or format old one if you can get it to boot and nothin real valuable on it.

ended up with new MB & CPU all fixed and a faster PC now

but reused my old MB & CPU just last week for parents pc case upgrade and they both worked LOL so I don't know what the original prob was...overheating maybe..

ANYWAY WAS THINKING IF IT'S NOT VERY OLD JUST A HARD DRIVE or reinstall of OS ??
MIGHT BE NEEDED..
The case STILL TURNs ON ??? - jUST NO windows SYSTEM STARTS UP???

sorry didn't see th caps stuck on...

i just talked to him.

he got it to boot in safe mode..errr..not HIM actually but a techy member...did yesterday. he got his training logs and appointments copied. he said the member did download both ad-aware and spybot. ran those. plus the "virus protection" he bought.

today he couldn't get it to do anything. i told him to bring it home. i'll check the internal battery. if i can get it to boot up in safe mode i'll check what all programs he has.

i can wipe it clean. we have the front desk software and out billing company ( same company) has all the up to date info.

as for any documents and files if he loses them, he loses them. there wasn't supposed to be that kind of stuff ever saved anyways.

he also said he kept backing up to the hard drive and not cd's. with the front desk software...thatis NOT a good thing.

double oy.

i'll look into that jo. we don't have the money to buy a new one, but we can't be without.

moi, i have hijack on my computer..i need to send you the logs. :D i have run in and went..huh? :p

who moi 06-11-2008 02:24 PM

well, wiping it off is always the last resort but good for the computer sometimes.

I always back things up. Bought an external hardrive with 250GB when it was on sale. Keeps the computer running fast and smooth without all the downloads.

Photos, movies, music files are the worst enemies for the slowdowns as well as crashes.

and with all the new files out these days, people demanding higher definition and faster speed only make things worse. On top of that, there is Windows Vista...:thud:

Try this for his computer before you try anything.

take out the power cord.

press the power button and hold it for 10 seconds (count 10 "MISSISSIPPI's)

if you can open up the computer, see if the memory cards (RAM) has more than one slot. If there is ie TWO memory cards, take them out very carefully and switch them around. (only do this if you are comfortable with opening up your PC)

make sure you touch something metal before you do this so you won't short it with statitic elec.

press the power button again for another 10 seconds, plug the cord back in.

This is a soft reset. Sometimes, this might work.

if that didn't work and there are absolutely NO screen at all, it might be the battery. But then you will have to go into BIO's afterwards and make sure you set everything correctly. How old is the puter??

I think that even if you were to get a new puter, you'll keep on having this problem cause your hubby doesn't want to learn how to protect it cause other people keep on doing it for him...just my two cents. LOL

yeah, send me your log file with hijackthis. Make sure you use the trendmicro's version 2.0 and not the old one from merjin.(he's a really nice guy)

do a scan and save log file. The log file will be in the notepad format (ascii)

email that to me and I'll take a look at it.

I volunteered at one of the anti-spy forums for awhile, got to learn some tricks. LOL

Curious 06-11-2008 02:32 PM

i don't know the age of the computer. it was put together by a member.

i'll try the cord thing. i also have extra ram that i bought for my compaq that wouldn't work, but will work on his. i'll try the switching first if he has 2 already.

i'll do the cord thing too.

i don't have a problem with any of this. taking it a part. i was the one who did all the computer stuff before i started staying home with grandmonkey. we had the same computer from 98 until 2005. i still have it here at home, it just wouldn't handle the front desk software and my quickbooks.

my hijack is 1.99,01, so i'll load the new one.

LOL...moi...i really don't think he can learn this.

what he does need to learn is NOT click on ads and to listen to his wife. too much to ask huh?

If you have Symantec/Norton or know someone who does (have it on CD), you could try booting from the CD. Just follow the prompts that appear on the boot-up screen and change the boot pathway.

Curious 06-11-2008 07:23 PM

i have mcafee on cd. would that work?

Bobbi 06-11-2008 07:46 PM

At this point, Curious, I'd say, it can't hurt. You can't exactly break what's already "broken," in a sense.

Whatever computer you're currently on - so you can write down the pathway:

Boot down and do a clean reboot.

Note the changes that have to be made in order to choose the booting direction (from, e.g., C drive to whatever label is assigned to the CD drive on the faulty 'puter).

If you can get the system to boot, you might be able to enter the HD through safe mode.

Too, if you've data that came with the CD, check it out or visit the domain for Mcafee; it may give detailed instructions.

who moi 06-11-2008 08:55 PM

If you can't get back to safe mode

try hitting F12 (after you've done the soft reset)

change the order to "booting from CD" (as the TOP of the priority)

turn off the PC

then try booting from McAfee CD as Bobbi suggested.

good luck!

(came back to add that on some computer, the boot key could be F10, I really wish MS would make everything uniformed...)
